W
alking through the doors of Society Pie is not just like walking into any old pizza parlor. It’s walking into a pizza society; a pizza family!
Looking back only one year ago, Josh and Stacey Kearney were living a comfortable if unremarkable life. They weren’t complaining. They both had reliable, solid careers working in corporate America. They had a good marriage. They had two beautiful, healthy kids named Emma and Luke. On the surface, they had everything, but there was something missing. They never took it for granted, never felt anything but grateful for the opportunities they’d been afforded and the good fortune they’d been blessed with. However, like for so many of us, the daily nine to five grind over the course of 20 years took its toll, leaving them bereft of inspiration. Their jobs lacked soul.

They’d always wanted to own their own business, and although neither of them had experience running a restaurant, they both had a sincere and passionate love for great pizza and beer. Over the years, they had developed a connoisseur’s palate, and even with so many restaurants in the Portland Metropolitan area, they recognized that there was still plenty of opportunity in the premium pizzeria market. They spent several months in research mode, learning the ropes of running a restaurant and testing every kind of crust, cheese, and sauce available, as well as sampling different kinds of craft beers, etc. It was only when they were 100% convinced that they had covered every base, and discovered the ideal recipes that they took the next step. It was in early 2021 that Society Pie was born! I had the pleasure of speaking to both Josh and Stacey and they are the kindest, most sincere and passionate people you could possibly imagine. This is their dream-come-true, and lucky for us, their dream was a delicious one! The restaurant is a reflection of their passion. It’s not your typical, insipid, cookie-cutter space. It’s an extension of the Kearney family! The decor matches their aesthetic. The music playing in the background is Josh’s own playlist. And, because he and Stacey are such huge

sports fanatics, they’ve also incorporated that into the mix. Let’s face it, pizza and beer go with sporting events like popcorn goes with the cinema, so their TV will always have a game or sporting event on. There’s no better place to meet up with friends and watch your favorite team play. The pizza itself is the best you can find in town. They specifically kept the menu selection to a minimum so they could focus on quality. Josh is relentless in his quest for perfection. He wants to exceed your expectations, and he does! But this is an on-going journey of discovery for them, and as we move forward from the pandemic, they will constantly be trying new things and adding to the menu. As it stands now, everything is totally fresh! They frequently shop the regional farmer’s markets and use local ingredients whenever possible. Their fantastic dough, which they worked for months to perfect, is literally made with only 5 basic ingredients (salt, flour, water, yeast, and oil) and fermented overnight to maximize flavor. It’s simplicity at its finest, and it makes for a simply delicious product. They use only premium Bacio Cheese from California. They use only craft beers from local breweries. They use only fresh ingredients in their salads. So much care and attention is given to every detail, that you can’t help but become enamored with the final product! Josh stated they run the business on 3 pillars: providing the highest quality products, providing the best service, and
providing a positive impact on the community. That last point is not one they take lightly, either. They make it a top priority to donate to charity and help other local businesses at every opportunity. HALLOWEEN TREATS FOR CHILDREN’S TEETH! Halloween is unlike any other day of the year. This magical day of make-believe allows your child (and you!) to embody a character or concept that sparks their admiration and curiosity. If the idea of denying your child candy or sweets on Halloween sounds daunting, don’t worry. There’s no need to go all or nothing, especially in the beginning. Instead, here are three tooth-friendly treats to enjoy and share this Halloween.
SUGAR-FREE GUM • Sugary gum is one of the worst kinds of treats for your child’s teeth. Instead, choose a sugar-free gum that’s been approved by the Amerian Dental Association (ADA). Chewing sugar-free gum after a meal or Halloween treat stimulates saliva production, which can help prevent cavities when combined with twice-annual dental visits and daily brushing and flossing. UNSWEETENED APPLESAUCE • Though unsweetened applesauce still contains natural sugars, applesauce offers your child the healthful addition of dietary fiber. Alongside promoting healthy digestion, dietary fiber helps maintain healthy blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Experts recommend that children aged one to three get about 19 grams of fiber daily, while children aged four to eight should consume 25 grams daily. A one-cup serving of unsweetened applesauce provides approximately 3 grams of dietary fiber. CHOCOLATE • Of all the conventional sweets that may make it into your child’s Halloween bounty, chocolate is usually a better option. Though chocolate does contain sugar, it is also believed to be more easily cleared out of the mouth than other sweets. Chocolate has a melting point between 93 and 96.8 degrees. In a human mouth of 98.6 degrees, chocolate melts and can wash off the teeth more quickly than hard or sticky candies. The best choice is chocolate that doesn’t include sticky additions, like caramel or nougat. Scarecrow Cookies Enjoy these Halloween-style cookies that are creatively shaped to look like scarecrows.
INGREDIENTS
1/4 C Betty Crocker™ Ready-To-Spread Vanilla Frosting 10 Creme-Filled Vanilla Sandwich Cookies 5 Baked Whole-Grain Wheat Crackers, Cut In Half 1 Tablespoon Sugar 10 Large Gumdrops 10 Pieces Candy Corn Black Decorating Gel
DIRECTIONS
1. Spread 1 slightly rounded teaspoon frosting on each cookie. For each scarecrow cookie, cut half cracker into shreds with sharp knife; place shreds on 2 sides of each frosted cookie to resemble hair. 2. Sprinkle work surface with sugar. Place 1 gumdrop on its side on sugar; flatten with rolling pin into 1/8-inch-thick triangle. Fold up one edge to form hat brim; place on cookie, trimming to fit if necessary. 3.
