TASTE OF THE TOWN

OLD TOWN BURGER & BREAKFAST

Diner Perfection By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer Photos by Shonda Feather Sometimes when we hear of a restaurant that’s new to us, we wonder what it’s all about. What’s the food like, what’s the atmosphere like, is it worth a try? Other times, we can intuit those answers without even having to experience it for ourselves. Case in point, Old Town Burger and Breakfast. Just by the name, we already know exactly what we’re going to get: hearty, delicious, stick-to-our-ribs food, a no-nonsense atmosphere, and the food will not only be worth the trip, it’ll be worth returning again and again! Roughly ten years ago, Old Town Burger and Breakfast opened its doors and sparked an immediate and passionate love affair with the public. Current owner Monica Valdes has been there almost since its inception. Her passion and dedication are poignantly evident, while her humility perfectly ref lects the modus operandi of the entire operation. It’s not about her, it’s about the food. So let’s talk about the food! Breakfast. The first meal of the day. Sometimes the only reason for putting on pants and getting out of the house. And at Old Town Burger and Breakfast, they do it right! Local favorites include: Beef and Eggs (a 1/3 lb Angus Beef patty and 2 eggs any style, served with hash browns and your choice of biscuit, English Muffin, or toast); and the Greek Omelette (a 3 egg omelet with Gyro meat, tomatoes, grilled onions, feta cheese, kalamata olives, pepperoncini, and tzatziki sauce, served with hash browns and choice of bread).

What really brings people in from miles away though are their dishes, which include their homemade sausage country gravy. Biscuits & Gravy (2 f luffy buttermilk biscuits smothered in gravy and served with hash browns), Country Fried Steak (southern style, battered, served with gravy, 2 eggs any style, hash browns, and choice of biscuit, English Muffin, or toast), and Wonder Hash Browns (hash browns cooked up with diced ham, grilled onions, and peppers, smothered with country gravy and topped with melted cheddar cheese), are all overwhelming favorites! Hot, hearty, and delicious! Burgers: It’s not just about breakfast! As the name suggests, it’s equally about the burgers! Theirs are made with incredible 1/3 lb fresh (not frozen!)100% Black Angus beef patties! All of their burgers are popular, but their best seller is the delicious Northwest Burger (1/3 lb Angus Beef patty, Tillamook cheese, fresh grilled jalapenos, mushrooms, pickles, tomatoes, crisp lettuce, onions, and their special House Fry Sauce). Their Fry Sauce, incidentally, is a secret recipe, made-from-scratch, and it’s a condiment you can’t get enough of! They do, of course, have some other items on the menu favorites include their Philly Cheesesteak, Chicago Italian Beef, Gyros, and hot dogs. For those with food sensitivities, they have multiple options including vegetarian versions of many of their dishes and gluten free bread for celiacs. For dessert, you can wash it all down with a homemade milkshake (with real ice cream!) or order a freshly-baked (from a local bakery!) Baklava! Burgers, breakfast, sandwiches, and more. At Old Town Burger and Breakfast, it’s all served up fresh, hot, hearty, and homemade! Come down today and don’t forget to bring your appetite! Old Town Burger and Breakfast is located at 813 W. Main St. in Battleground. For more details give them a ring at (360) 666-0522.

R&R MAINTENANCE

In honor of their service

IRVING DUFFY By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer Photos by Shonda Feather

It’s astonishing to learn, when we get to know our friends and neighbors, what some of these people have accomplished and endured over their lifetimes. Irving Duffy, owner and operator of A Better Shine Auto Detailing Service in Battleground, is the perfect example. On the surface, he’s an “ordinary” guy just like you or me; a businessman, a family man, an upstanding citizen of the community. Dig a little deeper though, and you’ll discover he is also a decorated war veteran; a man to be venerated; a hero. He is anything but ordinary. As far back as he can remember, Irving always wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. His father was a Marine who fought in the Vietnam War, and Irving grew up in the military milieu. Honor, courage, and discipline were as indispensable to him as air, water, and food. So dedicated was he that when he became of age in 1980, he turned down track-and-field scholarships to multiple colleges and instead enlisted in the Marine Corps. After completing boot camp at Parris Island, he reported for duty June 18, 1980 at Camp Lejeune as part of the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion. From there he rose through the ranks, facing every challenge and accepting every opportunity the Corps proffered, wishing only to maximize his potential and serve in whatever capacity most benefited the cause. That meant a lot of movement, of course, and during his first decade in the Corps he spent time in Beirut, Panama, and Okinawa Prefecture, as well as Camp Lejeune. It was a difficult time for him, with a wife and two young children at home. His most difficult tour of duty, however, came in 19901991 when he was deployed to Saudi Arabia to fight in the

Gulf War. As a member of the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, he was part of the brief but intense ground campaign which liberated Kuwait and advanced all the way into Iraq before the cease fire took effect. Irving recounted the chaos and horror of watching as thousands of men traveled across massive mine fields; mortar fire and mines exploding all around while the oil fields burned in the background. It was during that time that his vehicle was blown up by a nearby tank and he was severely injured with a traumatic brain injury. He pressed on and completed the mission, completed his tour, but ultimately it was this injury which would end his career after 20 years in the Marines. That was a lifetime ago now, but while the wounds heal, the scars remain. He is a decorated war veteran with medals for bravery and heroism, but he is also 100% disabled, and has had a much longer, ongoing battle of recovery since his return. Irving is a fighter though, a warrior, and a survivor. He has zero regrets, and he credits the Corps for making him the man he is today. Support local businesses, and support our local veterans. Gunnery Sergeant Duffy, thank you for your service!

Candy Hearts:

A History Of A Sweet Treat

By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer

N

ecco wafers, candy hearts, Sweethearts, conversation hearts. The candy goes by many names, with silly messages and a chalky consistency. The notorious candy hearts have a strange history that involves a pharmacy and America’s first candy machine. Our story begins in 1847, with a pharmacist named Oliver Chase, who invented a machine to produce lozenges. Back then, apothecary lozenges were popular for sore throats and other illnesses. But 175 years ago, the process to make a lozenge was labor-intensive: pulverizing medicine and sugar paste by hand with a mortar and pestle, kneading dough, then rolling and cutting out little discs. Considered the first candy machine, Oliver invented a lozenge cutter to simplify the process, and smartly shifted from making medicine to making candy, founding Chase and Company, which later became New England Confectionery Company, or Necco! Here’s where the story gets really interesting! Legend tells us that Union soldiers during the Civil War carried Necco wafers, known as “hub wafers,” and Oliver Chase might have been inspired by the love letters

these soldiers carried. Historians suggest instead that Daniel Chase, Oliver’s brother, was inspired by the growing popularity of Esther Howland’s Valentine Day cards which began selling in the mid-1800s. A third and more likely explanation is the oddly named cockle, a popular candy shaped like a scallop seashell which contained a “motto” printed on a thin roll of paper. Daniel cleverly improved upon this design to print the messages directly onto candy, by using a felt roller pad wetted with red vegetable coloring. However, Daniel’s “conversation candies” or “motto lozenges” weren’t heart-shaped until later in 1902. Up until that time, their candy was sold in a simple disc shape, but eventually were sold in shapes like baseballs, watches, and horseshoes. The candy hearts were hugely successful, and over the next 100 years other smaller companies began selling similar candies. In 1990, Necco acquired Stark Candy Company and became the “leading manufacturer in conversation hearts.” Today, the company claims to manufacture nearly 100,000 pounds of Sweethearts every day from midFebruary through January and approximately 8 billion candy hearts each year. But what is a candy heart exactly? Necco offers classic Sweethearts, as well as chocolate, sugar-free, “dazzled,” and “color your own” varieties. According to their website: “Manufacturers combine sugar, corn syrup, cornstarch, f lavors, gums and colors into a mixing machine to create a dough, which then goes into a machine that presses it flat, stamps it with sayings and cuts it into hearts. After 30 minutes in a “drying tunnel,” the six different heart flavors are mixed together and packaged.” Surprisingly, they’re not made out of chalk! Daniel Chase’s original printed lozenges were larger and therefore included longer phrases, like “HOW LONG SHALL I HAVE TO WAIT? PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE.” There were also weddingthemed sayings, such as “MARRIED IN WHITE, YOU HAVE CHOSEN RIGHT.” Previous sayings like the timeless “FAX ME” and “GROOVY” have been discontinued. “BE MINE” and “KISS ME” you may be more familiar with. Whatever your feelings on candy hearts, they’re a fun and fascinating little piece of American history.

February Book Reviews: LINCOLN IN THE BARDO by George Saunders An evasive, rousing, “historical” novel that follows Willie Lincoln, the young dead son of President Abraham Lincoln, into the bardo. In this inbetween place, discontented spirits linger, mutating in their unhappiness. The novel itself is a rabble of voices and an earnest meditation, and it celebrates how painfully human and exquisite it is to live fleetingly and to carry our ghosts with us. With this book, Saunders stoked me to flames and put me to rest.

by Chris Van Allsburg Each illustration captivates the reader. The ending rewards them. A boy goes to sleep and has a series of bewildering dreams that transport him to previously unimaginable futures. This wise book has just as much to say about aging and what comes to matter as we grow up as it does about our relationship to our environment. This is a book for anyone, young and old, who wants to tend their imagination.

THE TREASURE TROVE CONSIGNMENT SHOP

Hidden Treasure By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer Photos by Shonda Feather

E

very so often, you discover a local “treasure” that you were previously unaware even existed, and you find yourself almost in tears over the missed opportunities. In the case of The Treasure Trove Consignment Shop located in Vancouver, I’m now regretting all of those trips to other consignment stores. This is, of course, not to say anything negative about other stores, but only to highlight the amazing selection at The Treasure Trove. It all began back in 2009, when the world was knee deep in the worst recession since the Great Depression. People everywhere were losing their jobs, savings, houses, and worse. It was a terrible time for so many of us. But in the ashes of tragedy rose a beacon of light. Melissa Givvines and her husband recognized an opportunity and embraced it. Melissa’s husband had been a career military man and they had spent many years moving around the country. Something they witnessed during that time was that there were consignment shops set up in a lot of military towns, which were designed to assist people who moved around all of the time. It can be very difficult and expensive to recycle furniture every 2-3 years and most families can’t afford it. Consignment shops allowed them to sell their used items (and get a little return on their investment) while providing incoming families with lower cost alternatives. In 2009, when a large portion of our population was faced with similar circumstances, Melissa and her husband came up with the idea of opening their own consignment shop to help their struggling community. They take in almost anything, and they price items just high enough to cover their rent and make a small

20 To Advertise With Us, Call Brad 360.606.3412

profit to stay viable. That’s it! Beautiful, gently used items at thrift shop prices—and the majority of the money goes back to the community!

What started off as a humble attempt—a family trying to help their friends and neighbors— has matured into a thriving business! They now work directly with 22 charities in the community and 3,000 families! And while items are generally seasonal, they carry a little bit of everything. Melissa joked that they are “Fred Meyer without the groceries”! Next time you’re looking to give to charity or help your community, sell your used items on consignment or even donate them, go to The Treasure Trove. There is no easier or better way to directly help those in need! The Treasure Trove Consignment Shop is located at 11912 NE 4th Plain Rd. in Vancouver. They can be reached at (360) 260-4956.

COMMUNITY

NORTH COUNTY FOOD BANK

GIVE A MAN A FISH

By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer

G

ive a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. -Chinese proverb

Every community has people in need, and every community comes together to assist those people in a variety of ways. North County Community Food Bank (NCCFB) has been at the center of this effort, providing food and building confidence in Clark County since 1980. Under normal circumstances, NCCFB serves an average of 650-700 families per month (nearly 11,000 clients in total), in addition to offering a host of other services and resources which focus on helping families to solve problems and find solutions (to “teach them how to fish”!). They are an affiliate of the Clark County Food Bank, and one of the only local distributors of USDA commodities like shelf stable milk, cheese, canned beans and meat, and rice. In addition to subsidized commodities, they are also the largest purchaser of food in Clark County. Unfortunately, we are not currently living under “normal” circumstances. COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on all of our

lives, and the NCCFB is no exception. Because they have such limited space at their current location, they have been severely restricted in what they’ve been able to accomplish. All of their regular programs have been postponed indefinitely. They have also been forced to close their doors to the public, but they are still able to provide food curbside. While this is still a significant accomplishment, it’s only half the equation! Executive Director, Elizabeth M. HISTORY

The History of Fort Vancouver

Fur Traders, Settlers, And The Hudson Bay Company By Robert Matsumura, Active Media Contributing Writer

F

or many of us, Fort Vancouver and fireworks are synonymous with the Fourth of July. As one of the region’s largest fireworks displays, thousands gather each year to enjoy the brilliant pyrotechnics exploding over the shimmering waters of the Columbia. This annual celebration could not be located at a more prominent site when considering the significance of Fort Vancouver to the history of our region.

source of revenue. American interests, on the other hand, centered primarily around the ownership of land for settlement and agricultural development. This conf lict of interests would eventually tilt in favor of the United States.

Established in 1824 as a trading post for the British Hudson Bay Company, Fort Vancouver was headquarters for the Company’s Columbia Department which covered 700,000 square miles stretching from Alaska to California, and from the Rocky Mountains to Hawaii. The fort was named after Captain George Vancouver, a British Naval officer known for his exploration of the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, Hawaii, and Australia.

Holding the position of Chief Factor for 22 years, McLoughlin administered the law among his British subjects, kept peace with the indigenous, and strived to maintain amicable relations with the American settlers in the nearby Willamette Valley. It was McLoughlin who had originally allowed Americans to settle south of the Columbia River, which earned him the title, “Father of Oregon.” Contrary to the wishes of the HBC, McLoughlin provided substantial aid to American settlers, and in 1846 he resigned from the Company to found Oregon City along the bank of the Willamette River.

George Simpson, an employee of the HBC, was initially responsible for founding the fort. However, it was Dr. John McLoughlin, the fort’s first Chief Factor (manager), who was instrumental in developing Fort Vancouver as a primary hub of commerce in the region. At the time, the northwest was still in f lux, with the f ledgling United States vying with Great Britain for dominance over the territory. The fur trade, which was well-established in the area, generated immense profits for the HBC, and the Company was committed to safeguarding this valuable

Fort Vancouver was originally composed of a 20-foot high palisade approximately 750 feet long by 450 feet wide. Inside the palisade were 40 buildings, including a school, library, pharmacy, chapel, and blacksmith shop, along with individual homes. Residing outside the walls were a tannery, shipyard, hospital, and distillery. Agricultural products were cultivated in the orchards and fields surrounding the fort, in addition to a dairy providing milk and cheese. At the height of its activity, Fort Vancouver employed up to 600 workers who

staffed its network of two dozen trading posts, with six ships regularly plying the waters of the Columbia in transport of the Company’s goods. It was one of the largest settlements in the West, and also served as the end-point for migrants on the Oregon Trail. Between 1840-1850, fur trading revenue began to decline as increasing settlement of the region led to an economic shift towards mercantile activities based largely on agriculture, livestock, and timber operations. Originally, the fort’s primary employees consisted of French Canadians and members of indigenous tribes including the Metis, Iroquois and Cree. English, Scots, and Irish were found among the workforce as well. In the 1850s, workers from Hawaii arrived to augment the burgeoning enterprise, and in time became so populous that the village outside the fort became known as “Kanaka Town” or “Kanaka Village.” “Kanaka” translates roughly to “Hawaiian native,” or “Pacific Islander.” By 1849, this multi-cultural village was home not only to the employees of the HBC, but also became the site of Camp Columbia, a military base for the U.S. Army located on a rise 20 feet above the fort. Initially, traders and soldiers coexisted amicably at the fort. The Army provided additional employment for local workers and rented buildings in the village. The HBC allowed the Army access to its sawmill for cutting timber to construct the military post. During this period the Army built a number of structures, including the Quartermaster Depot and Captain Rufus Ingalls’ home, where the future Civil War general and U.S. President, Ulysses S. Grant, lived from 1852-1853. In time, the Army expanded the post to more than 10,000 acres and renamed it Fort Vancouver Military Reservation.

land overlapped the HBC’s fur trade activities, sparked conf licts between the Company and the United States. In June of 1860, the HBC withdrew from Fort Vancouver and consolidated its operations in Victoria, British Columbia. Following the departure of the HBC, the Army took over the fort and commenced adding additional facilities, notably the Vancouver Arsenal in 1859. Unfortunately, catastrophe struck in 1866 when a fire broke out that destroyed the entire original trading post. Over time soldiers rebuilt the fort, adding two double-story barracks at each end of the parade grounds. Officer quarters were also erected during this phase. In 1879, the post was renamed the Vancouver Barracks, and by World War I it had grown considerably. Upon the outbreak of World War II, the Army mobilized the post as a staging area for the Seattle Port of Embarkation. In 1946, the fort was officially closed. To honor Fort Vancouver’s historical significance, on June 19, 1948, the site was declared a U.S. National Monument. It was re-designated “Fort Vancouver National Historic Site” on June 30, 1961. Today, visitors can tour a full-scale replica of the original fort, including historical re-enactments and exhibits commemorating this iconic landmark, a site that figured prominently in our regional heritage.

In the wake of the 1846 Oregon Treaty, which established the U.S./Canadian border at the 49th parallel north, Fort Vancouver was effectively isolated within U.S. borders. And while the treaty provided for the HBC to continue operations at Fort Vancouver—including free access to the Columbia, Puget Sound, and Straits of Juan de Fuca—conducting business had become problematic. AUTOMOTIVE BONUS

RON’S AUTOMOTIVE

Quality You Can Trust, At A Fair Price!

By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer Photos By Shonda Feather

W

hen it comes to servicing your vehicle, there are a lot of choices out there. Some are content to simply drop their vehicles at the dealership knowing they’re probably paying more. Others are a little more discerning, and look to find comparable if not better service at more reasonable prices from locally-owned businesses. The one downfall with that scenario is, of course, finding a place you can trust. Well let me take that variable out of the equation and tell you about Ron’s Automotive in Vancouver (Cascade Park). Ron Warmen is a local guy born and raised here, and he’s been working on cars since he was in high school. In 1974, he went to Michigan to attend MoTech, an automotive school which, at that time, was one of the only ones in the country. Ron became fully certified, and has been fully certified since before that was even “a thing” in the industry! Already ahead of the game, he came back home, bought a mobile service truck, put out a ½ page ad in the Yellow Pages, and started his business. 46 years later, he’s still ahead of the game! A/C climate control repairs, brake repairs, transmission repairs, steering and suspension repairs, diagnostics, alternator and electrical repairs, 30k, 60k, and 90k services, oil changes, wheel alignments, diesel services, engine and radiator repairs, and towing services; Ron’s does it all.

Ron’s is a household name for many of us and for good reason. His reputation precedes him. Honesty, integrity, transparency; these are not concepts Ron needs to boast of because they are simply an integral part of who he is. And more importantly for you, they are an integral part of his business. But don’t take my word for it: ask his crew. Most of them have been with him for 20+ years. That’s loyalty that has to be earned. It can’t be bought! And that’s not all! Ron has a dealer’s license, too. He buys used vehicles from customers, fixes them up, and sells them to other customers. So rather than trading it in at the dealership for pennies on the dollar, talk to Ron and see what he can do for you first! Ron’s Automotive is locally owned and operated by a man who was born and raised here. Next time you need work done on your vehicle, don’t hesitate to call Ron’s. You’ll never take your vehicle anywhere else again. Ron’s Automotive is located at 16211 SE 1st Street in Vancouver. TASTE OF THE TOWN

LAS FLAMAS RESTAURANT & CANTINA

A Taste Of Fresh By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer Photos by Shonda Feather

W

hen it comes to truly remarkable cuisine, fresh is the name of the game. It doesn’t matter if you’re considering a 5 star restaurant or a dive bar; the fresher the ingredients, the better the food, and the more likely people will want to come back for more. When it comes to Mexican cuisine in the Vancouver area, there is no one who does it better or fresher than Las Flamas (aka “The Flames”)! Owners and operators, Marjie and Angel Estrada, opened their doors in September of 2018. They came to this new endeavor with over 40 years of combined experience between them. Marjie worked as a regional supervisor in the fast food industry for 13 years, while Angel managed his family’s restaurant, La Carreta, in Gresham for 30 years. The dream of course was to own their own restaurant, and when this location opened up they knew they’d found the perfect place in Vancouver. For those living in the area, you may remember it as Cisco’s (also a Mexican restaurant). Marjie and Angel loved the location and the fact that it already had that classic Mexican restaurant look, so it wouldn’t require an excessive amount of remodeling. They replaced all of the booths and tables, and cleaned and spruced the place up, but they didn’t want to fix what wasn’t broken, including the iconic sign out front!

With the remodel done, the next step was the menu and that is all theirs! As mentioned above, great food is all about “fresh” and everything on the menu is made fresh and from scratch. Chips: cut by hand from tortillas and fried daily on site. Salsa: fresh tomatoes, onions, and cilantro diced by hand daily and mixed on site. Taco shells: folded and fried daily on site. Everything but the tortillas are made in-house. And Marjie and Angel are huge supporters of local businesses. They’ve partnered with local suppliers for all of their produce and supplies! You may think all of this talk of “fresh” is an exaggeration, but once you’ve eaten at Las Flamas and tasted the difference, nothing else will ever match up to it again. Favorite dishes include their Molcajete (served in actual Molcajete bowls from Mexico with their fantastic house-made chorizo sauce), Carne Asada (served with topof-the-line skirt steak marinated in their special in-house sauce), and Pork Carnitas (which took them months to perfect, trying endless recipes until they landed on this one—and it’s incredibly moist!). These are just a few recipes because everything is fantastic! As a special note, for those gluten-sensitive folks out there, everything on the menu is gluten-free except the flour tortillas. Because they do serve flour tortillas, they can’t be certified as a gluten-free facility, but almost everything on the menu can be made to order with gluten-free ingredients! Of course, no Mexican Restaurant & Cantina can be considered complete without the Cantina drinks. And Las Flamas brings those in spades! Every margarita is made with a distinct top-shelf base of Silver Tequila, Triple Sec, Sweet & Sour, and a splash of O.J. Fantastic. And don’t worry

34 To Advertise With Us, Call Brad 360.606.3412

about getting thirsty half way through dinner. They offer a 50 ounce margarita! “The Flames” indeed! With year round specialty margaritas (like watermelon margaritas served in a fresh watermelon and pineapple margaritas served in a fresh pineapple), there is never a shortage of fun or fantastic beverages to keep you from getting thirsty. Locally owned and operated by people who truly love and care about their community, Las Flamas is a family business catered towards families. The level of their customer service

combined with the quality and freshness of their cuisine sets them far above the pack. Come in and see for yourself what a difference “fresh” makes! Last December, they donated a percentage of the proceeds to Relay for Life and other local vendors! Follow them on Facebook for info on local fundraising activities. Las Flamas is located at 10820 NE Coxley Dr. in Vancouver. Check out their website and menu at lasflamas.com, or call them at (360) 984-5450.

Apollo Drain & Rooter — A Story of Family Story & Photos Provided By Apollo Drain & Rooter Service

W

ith nothing more than an old used van, a dream and a desire to do great work, a young and eager Scott Bird and his bride Jody, began a journey.

If someone were to ask Scott if he was raised on a farm, he could emphatically reply, “Yes!” He grew up in Mattawa, Washington where he worked with his dad, three brothers and three sisters. When he was 21, he went to his cousin’s wedding reception. There, catching his eye from the reception line was his future wife, Jody. Their world grew closer since it was Jody’s sister marrying one of Scott’s cousins. Scott attended Utah Technical College for two years and graduated with a degree in Heating & Air Conditioning. The trade which he would then work in back home in Mattawa. Being back home gave Scott the opportunity to reconnect with Jody and they married in June of 1983. After about a year of working in the Heating and Air Industry, Scott and Jody decided to return to his family farm. Scott worked with his dad on the farm during the day and drove a semi-truck at

night hauling hay cubes to Seattle. Jody went to work for an insurance company in Othello, Washington. Jody’s sister and a couple of Scott’s cousins had started a drain cleaning company in Tri-Cities, Spokane and Salem, Oregon. It was going so well that they talked Scott and Jody into leaving the farm and to start their own drain cleaning business in Portland, Oregon. The Apollo journey: Scott was told by the bank that they didn’t think it was a “good investment.” They were so wrong. After procuring a bank loan, they were able to start a business of their own. Apollo Drain & Rooter was on its way! Their tagline, “Big enough to do the job, but small enough to care” would carry them through many years of hard and difficult work. Using their own apartment as their headquarters and Jody navigating with the large and cumbersome Thomas Guide Map Book, they offered a flat rate of only $26.50, no matter how long it took or how challenging the job was. Over the years of juggling work, marriage and parenthood the Birds eventually grew to become a family of 5 with 3 energetic boys! In 1985 Scott and Jody were blessed with their first baby boy, Brandon. Brandon was continuously by Jody’s side as she answered phones, scheduled jobs and handled the paperwork. In 1988 he was followed by little brother Ryan, and in 1990 their son Derek completed their family and the nest was full. With discipline, hard work and a good sense of humor, the young family survived many ups and downs. Tough economic times challenged their survival in the industry, but they kept going. No matter what challenges they faced, they did so with strength and integrity, always willing to help out their fellow members of the community.

As the Bird boys grew into men, they fully immersed themselves into the family business, which has become one of the fastest growing, full-service plumbing companies in Oregon and Washington. The company of two people has grown to over 50 employees! In 2014 the family became the first in this area to invest in the latest technology of plumbing called Cured In Place Pipe (CIPP). It is their dedication to a growing industry that instilled in them the desire to share this with an area where it is so desperately needed. CIPP, a trenchless lateral drain line repair, is the perfect answer to the root intrusion problem that is so prevalent in the Pacific Northwest. Old pipes are not getting any younger and degradation is a serious problem. Luckily, Apollo is a leader in the installation of LMK’s CIPP technology. After 37 years of successful plumbing and drain business, the Bird family are proud to announce they have added Heating and Cooling Services. This is exciting news, and the company looks forward to working with the community to keep everyone warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

THEN NOW

The Bird’s high standards and love of the work are a testament to their trade. They have great appreciation for the community and their continued support because they would not be where they are today without them.

TASTE OF THE TOWN

Pizza That Keeps Truckin’

By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer Photos By Shonda Feather

L

et’s be honest: Just about everyone likes pizza, right? Sure, there are those rare exceptions, and of course there are those who can’t eat it due to dietary restrictions. But if we were to count the number of people out of 100 who like pizza, it would be far easier to count the number who don’t like it. Although tastes and preferences vary, there’s good pizza and then there’s great pizza. In the Clark County area, there’s only one place to go for great pizza, and that’s Juliano’s Pizzeria! For those living in the area, this comes as no surprise. Juliano’s has been a favorite, serving the community there for the last 34 years! For those living outside the area, this is the kind of place you’ve been searching for all over town but have never quite found. This is not one of those fussy, pretentious, faux-elevated “pizza experience” kind of places where you can’t pronounce or even recognize the toppings. No, sir! Juliano’s is the kind of unadulterated, old-school, family pizza parlors that we all worshipped in the 70s and 80s. What does it mean to be an old-school pizza parlor? This is the kind of place you take the kids on a Friday night, take your softball team after the game, or take your best friend or significant other for a fun night out. Thanks to the full table service, you don’t have to get up every time you want a soda refill. You get treated to a warm, friendly, and inviting family atmosphere. And last but not least, it means you’re served the most amazing pizza you’ve ever had in your life. Juliano’s is the brainchild of Steve Juliano. Back in 1987, he

38 To Advertise With Us, Call Brad 360.606.3412

was a huge Grateful Dead fan, and followed the band from New York all the way across the country to land here in Clark County. Clearly the business was influenced by his experiences and love of the band. With pie combo names like “The Jerry G” and “The Grateful Veggie,” breadsticks known as “Deadsticks,” and the dancing bears and album covers which decorate the walls, you can’t help but love and appreciate how well it jives with the “rock and roll” vibe of the traditional pizza parlor. It’s perfect! Current owner, Kim Meadors, purchased the business from Steve back in 2000 and understood the phrase “don’t fix what isn’t broken.” She loved the atmosphere, loved the food, and more than anything, wanted to simply honor Steve’s legacy and continue serving the best pizza in town. For the past 21 years that’s exactly what she’s done. To slightly misquote the Grateful Dead: She put her money where her love was! COVID-19 has of course presented some unusual challenges over the past year and a half, but otherwise she’s kept on truckin’. So let’s talk a little bit about the pizza. What makes it so special? For starters, Kim’s team is not stingy with the toppings! This is serious “knife and fork,” one-slice-might-be-all-you-need kind of pizza. Kim told me that “The Hurricane,” their signature pie and one of their most popular items, weighs a whopping 8 to 9 lbs in the X-tra large size; topped with pepperoni, salami, onions, Canadian bacon, mushrooms, green peppers, black olives, beef and sausage. You could literally forgo the gym tonight and just curl this pizza to build up those biceps! Other favorites include their Sausage Pizza and “The Drunken Hawaiian” (with shredded Canadian bacon, pineapple, and sausage on a layer of creamy alfredo sauce), a fantastic combo conceived by her employees while messing around; but it was so good and so popular that it became a menu staple! There’s also 10 other house options to try, or you can build your own.

If you want to make it really interesting, try turning it into a calzone or pocket pizza!

varieties) and wine—everything you could possibly want for a perfect pizza night!

The quality of ingredients makes a huge difference as well. The dough is made fresh daily, using the same special recipe Steve came up with back in 1987. The cheese is whole milk mozzarella purchased in blocks and shredded daily for freshness and flavor. The sausage is real sausage cut from links—not frozen! Everything, in fact, is fresh and prepared daily. Oh and they love their freshly-grated garlic! In fact, their wi-fi password is “yaygarlic,” if that tells you anything!

Kim is a wonderful ambassador for the city, too, always supporting the local school teams and contributing to fundraisers. She would like to offer her sincerest gratitude to everyone in town for their amazing and undying support!

Like any pizza parlor, they have the standard alternatives like salads and sandwiches which are also fantastic, but Kim is honest: People come here for the pizza, not the salads! They also have an amazing selection of beers on tap (at least 10

iving in the Northwest, homeowners are all too familiar with gutter woes. Damaged and clogged gutters can bring a host of pricey complications which must be dealt with: damaged roofing, damaged siding, damaged landscaping, water intrusion issues, foundation problems; the list goes on. There are a multitude of gutter systems, but very few which are built to withstand our local weather conditions. Gutter Shutter is an all-in-one system that comes with a transferable lifetime warranty guaranteeing never to clog, sag, or pull away from your home. It is manufactured in the USA out of .032 gauge aluminum, which is 40-50% thicker than most brands, and as a result is much stronger. With its All-In-One Design and patented bracketing system, Gutter Shutter is the strongest gutter system on the market. And for

us here in the Northwest, it effortlessly manages heavy rainfall using the principle of “surface tension.” No more ugly clogs! No more climbing ladders to clear debris! Gutter Shutter has been making believers out of people for over 20 years (on the East Coast). Now that they are available here in Oregon and Washington thanks to Pacific Gutter Company, we have no reason to settle for less! Pacific Gutter Company provides stress-free financing, expert installation, Gutter Shutter’s lifetime warranty, and the friendliest service around. SEASONAL

MUSHY MOVIES By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer Pride and Prejudice (2005) - PG

50 First Dates (2004) - PG-13

Based on Jane Austen’s romantic novel published in 1813, there are many film versions of P&P but this is the best one, in my honest opinion, and I’ve seen a lot of them! This is a romance drama starring the electric Kiera Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, alongside such brilliant actors as Donald Sutherland and Judi Dench, and many other familiar English faces. What stands out most is the quick wit and ratatat dialog, not just between men and women, but among everyone in high Victorian society in the English countryside. This is a movie of side glances and subtext, wry smiles and melodrama. What really ties this together is a masterly, whimsical score by Dario Marianelli that’s guaranteed to make your heart swell.

Adam Sandler has starred in a curious number of romantic comedies which are surprisingly good, and this is no exception. This movie co-stars the lovely and hilarious Drew Barrymore, who has a rare condition of anterograde (short term) amnesia following a car accident. The comedy and yearning ensue when Henry (Sandler) and Lucy (Barrymore) fall in love over and over, and Henry’s attempts become i ncreasi ng ly more involved and sentimental in an attempt to cause her to remember him. Also starring Rob Schneider, Sean Astin, Blake Clark, and Dan Aykroyd, this movie is as sweet and sappy as it is hilarious and downright absurd.

10 Things I Hate About You (1999) - PG-13

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018) - PG-13

A wry adaptation of Shakespeare’s comedy The Taming of the Shrew, this film follows a sprawling 90s cast with the likes of beau-hunk Heath Ledger, starlet Julia Stiles, and quick-witted Joseph-Gordon Levitt. The plot, if you’ve never read the play, is a convoluted tangle that is best explained as a series of romantic bets on unlikely love, not dissimilar to a number of plates spinning simultaneously as the audience holds its breath and fights back laughter. But especially, the film involves Heath Ledger trying to “tame the shrew,” or stubborn woman, Julia Stiles. It’s teenage love, rebellion against parents’ wishes, and high school drama, which makes for a fascinating and impossible potpourri of comedy, romance, and drama. And the 90s music ain’t half bad either.

In this teen romantic comedy, shy high school junior Lara Jean has her unsent love letters unknowingly sent out to her crushes by her younger sister. What follows is as equally nerve-wracking as it is adorable and sweet, as she begins down a complex journey of conf licted feelings and love and heartbreak. T h is roma nt ic comedy is startlingly modern, full of sleek text chat bubbles and Gen Z slang, and an incredible insight into what young love looks like in the 21st century. Starring Lana Condor, Noah Centineo, and Janel Parrish, this movie spawned two sequels and a cult-like following.
