The George Cross was awarded to the island of Malta by King George VI in 1942, to bear witness to the gallantry and heroism exhibited by the Maltese people during the World War II. The George Cross is woven into the Flag of Malta and can be seen wherever the flag is flown.

ENDEMIC MALTESE WILDLIFE A VARIETY OF ENDEMIC ORGANISMS SAID TO BE FOUND ONLY ON OUR ISLANDS.
The Maltese islands have 78 species that are endemic, a very good number considering the country's area. 23 of the endemic species are vascular plants, while the other 55 species are animals.

FEASTS & FOLKLORE TRADITIONS WHICH DEVELOPED IN MALTA OVER THE CENTURIES
Local festivals celebrating the patron saint of the local parish are a spectacle not to be missed in Malta & Gozo. A typical Maltese ‘festa' lasts three days or longer. On any one of these evenings, you are bound to see hundreds of people in festive mood. Banners, statues raised on wooden columns and festoons decorate the main streets of the locality where the feast is taking place. The inhabitants of the town or village then add to this festive mood by decorating their own balconies and rooftops with lit up coloured festoons - blue, red, green - according to the feast they are supporting.

HORSE & CARRIAGE AN OLD TRANSPORTATION METHOD THAT REMAINS THUMPING IN OUR HEARTS
In Valletta or Mdina, the horses you're likely to see are of the tourist-ride variety, but even these are interesting. The small, covered carriages they pull - called "karozzini" - are unique to the islands. They are a graceful and historic form of transport - a hangover from bygone colonial times when British servicemen used karozzini as their preferred method to get around the island.

FESTIVAL OF DELICIOUS BERRIES PROUD PRODUCE OF IMGARR
The agricultural village of Imgarr in Malta is renowned for the quality and unique taste of its strawberries. Every year it hosts an event called Festa Frawli wherein tonnes of fresh strawberries and strawberry produce are sold, such as: cakes, smoothies, milk-shakes, ice-creams, waffles, pancakes, jams, and also strawberry wines and liqueurs.

RELIGION A COUNTRY WITH 365 CHURCHES
The main religion in Malta is Roman Catholicism, in fact, most Maltese claim to be Catholic and participate in Catholic religious services. Malta adopted this religion with the arrival of St Paul in 60 A.D. when the ship he was sailing shipwrecked on the islands, and changed Malta's religious history forever.
