ACHIEVEMENTS 2023-2024 MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Action Deafness continues to grow from strength to strength, constantly adapting to meet the changing needs of our beneficiaries and the challenges of these changing times. We continue to make positive differences in the lives of individuals and supportive communities.

Here are just some of the things we did this year to transform the lives of Deaf and hard of hearing people.

Expanded AD’s Digital communication Increased Hub Connect Services across the UK Introduction of D-Youth Hub Supported more people through AD’s Community & Care Service Grown AD’s pool of PA’s and interpreters

STRATEGIC PLAN The new Strategy Plan (2023-2027) will guide the organisation over the next three years. The objectives, within the plan, will help us to reduce inequalities, provide tailored support, establish new regional projects, diversify services and promote digitisation.

COMMUNICATIONS & INTERPRETING We have recruited new booking co-ordinators to the team to manage interpreting contacts in new areas. Our high-quality service provision is accessible to even more Deaf people in the UK.

COMMUNITY & CARE Community and Care continues to provide round-the-clock specialist support for Deaf, Deafblind and Hard of Hearing individuals in their homes and communities. We are seeing more referrals to the service in current and new areas. We are excited that new services are meeting the needs of our clients.

“My life before having a communicator guide was not good. I lived alone, I was isolated and no one took me to the deaf community.

Now I have two fantastic staff, I can go out and meet Deaf people in the community. The staff members support me to communicate in my medical appointments too. I am very pleased to receive a good service.”

SERVICES HUBS CONNECT This year we have seen more Deaf and hard of hearing people attending Hubs Connect services.

We have provided important information to the community while facilitating social gatherings to combat loneliness and isolation.

D-YOUTH HUB We are delighted to have established the D-Youth Hub in Derby for young Deaf people.

We believe it is vital for young people to have places to meet like-minded peers to support their language and identify formation.

We look forward to opening more D-Youth Hubs in new areas in the future.

EMPOWERING INDEPENDENCE: SUCCESS STORIES NEW TO THE AREA A young Deaf person, new to the area, attended a Hubs Connect meeting.

We were able to provide mental health support, financial management, information about accessing Deaf-friendly apps and signposting. We collaborated with local professionals and provided Deaf awareness to relevant organisations The young person can now confidently access mental health services independently, manage a weekly budget and contact essential services when required.

They know Action Deafness is always here for them if further support is needed.

OVERCOMING BARRIERS A Deaf middle-aged person was referred by a social worker after a dispute with a private landlord.

She experienced severe anxiety and agoraphobia.

We were able to help her get a new tenancy agreement and

Discretionary Housing Payment to help with her housing costs.

AD was able to support the client attend Hub sessions. The client has now grown in confidence and attends Hub sessions once a week by themselves.

PARTNERSHIPS Action Deafness collaborates with other organisations to share good practice and increase the impact of our services.

This year, we have worked closely with QUAD Derby’s Cultural Hub and The Royal School for the Deaf Derby to establish the D-Youth Hub.
