The Man Behind the Choo Tjoe’s Steam Engines
Have any of you taken a ride on those miniature steam trains which are exact replicas of big steam locomo ves?
Passengers sit in the open astride li le seats, as does the train driver, and you chuff away around a circuit pulled by a small but perfect steam train.
Well, it was these trains that first sparked Shaun Ackerman's interest in steam trains as a child.
“Both my late granddad and father were signal engineers on the railways. My granddad built those live steam models, built 24 of them, and that's what sparked my interest,” Shaun said.
I wrote recently about the man behind refurbishing the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe's carriages. Now meet Shaun, the man from Fairlie Projects who will restore the steam locomo ves.
Although Shaun trained and worked as a civil engineer, his love of steam later drew him to restoring steam engines with the Reef Steamers, a non-profit organisa on that specializes in these restora ons.
How did he learn to do this?
“I learned a lot from my granddad, and I also had a lot of opportunity to learn from the old railway guys, so I was fortunate, but I'm 80% self taught. I'm passionate about what I do.”
He's going to need that passion to carry him through the restora on of the Choo Tjoe steam locomo ves. They've been standing at Mossel Bay and George for 20 years.
“They deteriorate more at the sea, so it's going to be a total strip down. But nothing's irreparable if you have the money and the means to repair, and the funding should be released soon. I'm really excited.”
Shaun says it's not his place to say what it costs to restore a steam locomo ve, except that “it's six-figure numbers”.
Alan McVi y, CEO of Classic Rail and the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe, said they already had “pilot funding” to clear the bush to examine the tracks and to do dive assessments of the bridges. This informa on would feed into preparing a final budget. The funding, already iden fied, would be released soon a erwards.
They've done two full assessments of the rolling stock, “right down to chassis, wheels and bearings”.
The plan is to restore two engines ini ally, one steam and one diesel, for use on the first phase of the Choo Tjoe between Sedgefield and Knysna. Shaun will work on both in tandem.
Diesel is not nearly as a rac ve to my mind, but they need to have one both as backup for breakdowns and also to use on “fire days” when marshals rule that the fire risk from steam trains is too high.
“There's a fire marshal in Knysna and in George. We'll be working with both and need to follow fire protocols.”
There are heritage steam trains all over the world that are fully booked. Why is steam so appealing?
Shaun thinks it may be a bit of nostalgia, but believes it's largely because of the wonderful scenic routes that many of the world's tourist steam trains follow
But there is something else, he says. “I think it's because a steam train feels like a living machine, not dead like diesel. There's fire and water inside it, it hisses steam, it feels alive.”
