Steam Trains and Choo-Tjoe Carriages
I love steam trains.
So do thousands of others, of course, which is why there are s ll so many opera ng as heritage and tourist railways – like the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe currently being brought back to life.
But it is even be er travelling on a steam train as a traveller, not a tourist. I wonder how many of you have done that? If you grew up in South Africa, there is a good chance you have because steam trains operated here un l the late 1990s. The last mainline steam-operated passenger train, the Trans Karoo, made its final run in March 1997.
As a child I travelled a few mes on the sleeper train from Cape Town to our grandparents in Knysna for Christmas. As we grew up, the whole family couldn't fit into the car.
I remember vividly the smell of those blue leather seats and the coal smoke, the piercing whistle, the sash windows with the springbok emblem and the li le metal washbasin that you pulled out of a sort of cupboard. We got the giggles washing as the water slopped around with the swaying of the train.
My father always booked us a coupé, with two berths. The train le in the late a ernoon.
Dinner was in the dining car with starched white tablecloths, heavy SAR/SAS cutlery and we always seemed to have borrie rice. We dined as the train was chugging through the mountains a er Worcester with the sunset ligh ng up those beau ful rocks.
Later the bedding steward made our beds with crackling white sheets and blue blankets with the railways logo. I don't think I have ever slept so deeply as I did on the gently rocking train. Back to the Choo-Tjoe. I cha ed to Les le Roux, the cabinet carpenter and builder who is tasked with refurbishing the Choo-Tjoe carriages. Les, based in Cape Town, refurbished the carriages for the Shala Train Hotel in Kruger Na onal Park.
So what are the main challenges with this job?
“The state of the carriages. They've been standing at George Museum with zero maintenance since 2006. They've got holes in the roof and have been vandalised. We'll have to gut them and redo pre y much everything. That means first stripping the wood panelling from the ceilings and walls to see the state of the metal,” Le Roux said.
He and Alan McVi y, CEO of Classic Rail and Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe, will soon meet to brainstorm how the interiors will be refurbished.
“The plan is to s ck as close to the original as possible.”
He says much of the old panelling is veneer, possibly teak. There will be a kitchene e and loo, and some cycle racks.
“The plan is to get three carriages ready for use for the Sedgefield to Knysna run while the rest of the line is being repaired. It will be a challenge to get all the doors and windows opera ng. They are sash windows and all the workings are behind the panelling. But the first thing is the metal work, ge ng the structure waterproofed and sound.”

May he continue dancing his way through the bingo halls of Heaven, Gerald is survived by his doting partner, Lynn; his sister Moira, his children, Grant, Dale, and Ashley; and his grandchildren, Keenan, Caitlyn, Scarlett, and Jarryd. He was loved deeply by his family and friends whose lives he touched. Though no longer with us, Gerald’s warmth and humour, will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
