Whale Tales and Ocean Breath
I saw a kayaker paddling offshore of Noetzie on Monday morning, quite far out to sea.
I was surprised that he was alone, and got out my binoculars. He was paddling eastwards and I wondered how far he had come. Just a er he'd turned back, I saw a whale surface not far behind him, heading straight towards him.
“Oh no!” I thought, having heard about whales overturning yachts.
I don't think the paddler saw it.
Then the whale sank below the surface and I thought it had gone. Suddenly it resurfaced almost alongside the kayak. I'm pre y sure the guy saw it this me because his paddling became a bit turbo-charged.
Happily the whale disappeared and the paddler went on his way I think it was a humpback.
This reminded me of that extraordinary case last year when a humpback “swallowed” a kayaker in the Magellan Straits at the p of Chile.
Father and son were paddling along when a humpback rose up under the son and sucked him and his kayak into its huge mouth.
The whale clearly did not like the feel of the man or kayak and spat them out. The young man, Adrián Simancas, 23, was unharmed –but obviously shocked.
He later told the Guardian: “When its mouth closed around me and pulled me down, I felt like I was in a whirlpool, lying down and spinning around. There was nothing I could do.”
His father's camera, mounted on his cra , recorded the whole thing –and the video went viral.
The humpback could never have swallowed Adrián as its throat is only the size of a man's fist, but I guess you don't know that when you're in its mouth.
Humpbacks are apparently not aggressive, but are curious.
Their sheer size – 14m long and weighing 40 tons – make them poten ally hazardous if people get too close. Even a flick of a tail can cause injury.
Humpbacks were hunted to the brink of ex nc on by the whaling industry, and by 1960 there were only about 5000 le . A er humpback whaling was banned in 1966 their numbers started to recover and there are about 135,000 today
But they s ll get killed by ships, become entangled in fishing gear and are even killed by undersea explosions.
Happily humpbacks are now worth more alive than dead. In Hawaii alone humpback whale watching brings in $20million a year.
It's great we're saving whales, but we really need to save the en re ocean, don't we?
Oceanographer Dr Sylvia Earle has spent much of her life trying to educate people about how much we depend on the ocean for our survival. For instance one kind of ocean bacteria produces about 20% of the oxygen in the atmosphere.
“Put another way,” she says, “this nearly invisible form of life generates the oxygen in one of every five breaths you take, no ma er where on the planet you live.”
Earle believes we s ll have a chance to make things be er for the ocean, but not unless we take ac on now
“And inspire others to do the same thing. No one is without power Everybody has the capacity to do something.”
