Does Knysna Hate the Homeless?
How many paychecks are you away from living on the streets?
Those in Knysna with big houses and secure investments probably never think about it.
But there are many more who would be on the streets within a month or two of losing their jobs.
I met a man like that in Joburg years ago. He lived in the suburbs with his wife and children, un l he was retrenched. He couldn't find another job and started drinking. His house and car were repossessed, his wife and kids le him, and he was homeless within a few months.
There is a story behind every homeless person.
Why are so many people against the homeless? Is it because on some level they see the person they could so easily become?
This is a ques on that perplexes a local woman on the Knysna Homeless Forum, who is trying to get a homeless shelter established in Knysna. Let's call her Jane.
“I don't want my name published. There is so much aggression in this town against people doing something for the homeless - vile comments on social media. All I want to do is get people to see the other side. What hope do these people have of ge ng a job without a place to shower or wash their clothes? No one employs a s nking person,” said Jane.
There are about 200 homeless people in Knysna. The Forum wants to establish a shelter for 50 people. They want the Knysna Municipality to provide land or a building for the project.
The KM has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Knysna Chamber of Commerce, one of the partners in the Forum.
“It's not a municipal mandate to provide a homeless shelter, but it is to provide property or land – or a vacant building – for a shelter,” Jane said.
There are homeless shelters in Ple , George, Oudtshoorn and Mossel Bay, but not in Knysna. Why?
“That's why we're running an awareness campaign to try to change the a tude of the Knysna public who say things like 'oh it will be a crime centre'. They don't see these people as human beings.”
No one wants a ra of people sleeping in doorways and using the pavement as a loo, but Jane said as the municipal toilets are locked at night, where can they go?
The plan is to have a well-run shelter, with a manager living on site with 24-hour oversight, and criteria for admission. No one on drugs or alcohol will be allowed in un l they are rehabilitated. There will be training for things like bricklaying or sewing, and assistance with ge ng documenta on like IDs. It will be a stepping-stone for the homeless, not a permanent home.
There have been several a empts to set up a shelter, but apparently the outcry from Knysna residents (those with homes) has torpedoed them. That's a shame.
Perhaps we can take a leaf out of US author Carol Wallace's book: “We must stop trea ng homelessness as a crime and start addressing it for what it truly is: a solvable challenge that demands compassion, crea vity and commitment.”
