Silent Peace Walk to Washington
Something really interes ng is happening in the USA that's drawing crowds of thousands.
I'm not talking about the protests against the killing of Renee Good and Alex Pre by ICE troops in Minneapolis – although those are drawing huge crowds too – but the 19 Buddhist monks who are walking from Texas to Washington DC to spread a message of peace.
I wouldn't have thought many in the US would be interested in something like this, but huge crowds are gathering along the monks' route, clapping and cheering and handing them flowers.
It's quite extraordinary
Listening to some people being interviewed there appears to be a hunger among Americans for anything that speaks of peace.
One woman said: “I think we need it now more than ever, with what's been going on in our country, we need people spreading kindness and peace and compassion.”
She echoed what others of all ages, races and sexes have said.
So what's this walk about?
Interes ngly, it began long before the ICE killings in Minneapolis.
The monks, mainly Vietnamese, are from a Buddhist temple in Fort Worth, Texas. Bhikkhu Pannakara, or Nguyen, is their spiritual leader.
He said in an interview that he sees so much suffering in the world, and wanted to do something to spread peace. Eventually he decided to do a peace walk to Washington DC.
The monks le Texas on 26th October last year and have walked through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South and North Carolina and are now in Virginia. The walk is 3,700km long and they average 22km a day. Their rescue dog, Aloka, walks with them. Their route is on Facebook and some townsfolk wait hours in the cold for the monks to arrive. There are now 2.4 million FB followers.
The monks walk in silence, but stop in towns to explain to the crowds what they're doing. As one journalist said: “The peace march is not poli cal, not a protest, but a spiritual prac ce rooted in mindfulness, discipline and compassion, to remind people that peace is not something you demand from others, but something you prac se yourself”
Nguyen says mindfulness is not about Buddhism, nor are they trying to convert anyone, but want to share their technique of mindfulness. Peace is possible not because the world changes, but because we change.
“The seed of peace is within us all. We cannot change the world but we can start changing ourselves. Every morning we wake up fresh, but if we don't give our minds a job to do, it will pick up all the trash and chew it over and over un l we are overwhelmed and we suffer”
So a first step in the mindfulness prac ce is to write on a piece of paper when you wake: “Today is going to be my peaceful day.” Read it over and over, then out loud.
“Now our mind has another job. This journey to mindfulness is not an easy journey. You have to prac se – without any expecta ons.”
One interviewer asked Nguyen what he made of all the a en on.
“I never expected this. The crowds get larger each day. Somehow this walk of peace has touched their hearts.”
