The Story of a Young Tern

Knysna musician Wendy Dewberry found something that I have always wanted to ﬁnd: a ringed bird.

She was on holiday at Cintsa on the Wild Coast last week when she found a dead tern with a lile metal ring on its leg.

As many will know, researchers aach rings to birds mainly to track their movements, especially those that migrate. The ring has a number to idenfy the bird and contact details of the researchers who ringed it.

The Brish Trust For Ornithology (BTO) website was on the ring, so Wendy contacted them. They said it was a Sandwich tern that had been ringed as a chick last year in northern Scotland at the Forvie Naonal Nature Reserve. Forvie is beauful and an important breeding ground for many seabirds.

Ringing birds is one way for researchers to ﬁnd out where migratory birds travel in summer. This tern's ﬂock chose the Wild Coast, a journey of over 10,000km!

Raymond Duncan, secretary of the BTO ringing group, told Wendy he was sorry that she had found the young tern dead.

“But at the same me,” he wrote, “nice to think it had a few months of nice weather and ﬁshing down there with you – and that lots of others sll are. Thank you for reporng it.”

Of course many ringed birds are spoed alive by birdwatchers that report their sighngs. That is even more fun, but I don't have powerful enough binoculars to be able to read rings.

It would have been wonderful had this youngster been found alive, but at least its long ﬂight across the world has been recorded, adding another piece of the jigsaw to sandwich terns' migratory paerns.

These terns in Scotland have been through a tough me. According to Raymond, many died during the Avian Bird Flu epidemic in 2023 and more died in 2024 because their main food source, sand eels, abruptly disappeared.

But in 2025 researchers found a record number of tern eggs at Forvie, and the youngster Wendy found was one of these hatchlings. Although the body was fairly fresh, there was nothing obvious to show the cause of death.

But sll, because of the ring we know where it was born, that it was th ringed on 28 May 2025 (too young to be sexed), that it was about eight months old and had travelled an astonishing 10,416km.

I love bird watching and I love the story behind ringed birds.

BTW, remember that incident in New York's Central Park in 2020 where a white woman falsely accused a black birdwatcher of threatening her? (I think she got mad because he told her to put her dog on a lead.) Anyway, it became internaonal news.

His name was Chrisan Cooper and I think his words capture some of the aracon I feel about birding: “Birding shis your percepons, adding new layers of meaning and brokering connecons: between sounds and seasons, across far-ﬂung places, and between who we are as people and a wild world.”

Meanme I will keep turning over every dead bird I ﬁnd, in the hopes that one day I will ﬁnd a ringed one.
