Let’s Catch the Rain
Knysna's water supply has reached a cri cal stage with an es mated 13 days of water le in the Akkerkloof Dam – the town's main water storage reservoir, according to the Department of Water Affairs.
“The situa on is a serious water security crisis and warrants immediate and collec ve ac on from all sectors of society,” the Department said on Friday.
That includes you and me.
The Earth's water supply is finite. No “new” water will arrive from outer space. What we have now is all we will ever have, so we have to manage it cleverly.
What are we doing in Knysna?
The Knysna Municipality declared the area a “water-stressed” region in December, which meant the town could unlock resources to help with the crisis. The na onal and provincial authori es are working with the municipality in the Joint Opera ons Centre (JOC).
The big push now is to look for water sources the town has not yet exploited, mainly borehole water
I spoke to Eugene Vermaak, head of the Knysna Infrastructure Group (KIG), who said the good news is that the water from the Knysna Mosque's new borehole has been tested and declared safe for human consump on.
The mosque sunk this borehole at their own expense and has offered to share the water with the town.
“We're now looking at ways of ge ng it into the water re cula on system to get it to residents,” Vermaak said.
They have approval from the Department of Water Affairs and the Breede-Olifants Catchment Management Agency to use the water, and will meet the JOC this week to discuss it.
“There is a massive aquifer under there, and you don't have to go very deep to get it, only about 90m,” Vermaak said.
“We will have to create a pump sta on to boost the borehole water up to the same pressure as the Knysna Municipality's.”
You know what I think? The Knysna Municipality should make it compulsory that every new house has at least one 5000-litre tank to catch rainwater – and new commercial buildings should be required to have more.
My sister Julie, who lives at Noetzie where there is no municipal water supply, relies en rely on rainwater. They have five 5000-litre tanks and one 6000-litre tank underground that collect the rain from the roof
This month there has been only 12mm of rain to date - but this 12mm has fed 3000 litres of rainwater into their tanks.
Think about that guys! That's half the 6000 litres the municipality says each household should use in a month.
Julie's household uses rainwater for everything: drinking, showers, washing machine, lavatories, cooking. They have never run out of water – but they do use it sparingly.
Imagine if everyone who has the money puts in five 5000-litre tanks. Vermaak believes everyone who can afford it should get rainwater tanks, and says it should be compulsory for new buildings.
“We have recommended this to the municipality: that your plans will not be approved unless you have rainwater tanks.”
With global warming, water problems are not going to go away
