Rain and Dead Fish Happy New Year! The good news is that it rained on New Year's Day, a sign of good rains in the coming year, according to old Knysna folklore. Hope folklore triumphs over forecasts. The bad news is the death of hundreds of fish in the Hartenbos River estuary near Mossel Bay. Reports on Monday quote the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment saying the fish died because of sewage discharge into the river. Sewage may be yuk to us, but it is excellent food for many river plants like algae, which reproduce like crazy. Problem is when this mass of algae dies, and bacteria feed on the dead algae, they use up vast amounts of dissolved oxygen in the process – leaving too li le oxygen for fish and shellfish which suffocate to death. Apparently this is what happened at Hartenbos. Municipali es all over the country discharge sewage effluent into rivers, but only a er the raw sewage has been treated to a level that the Department of Water Affairs considers safe for people and the environment. So what went wrong here? Did the treatment plant fail to meet the discharge standards? Or has the drought caused the Hartenbos River to fall so low that the concentra on of effluent was too high for the amount of water? And if so, why was the discharge quality not adjusted? Here at Noetzie we have also had die-offs on the beach, in this case black mussels. We can't work out why. They have died in clusters at one end of the beach and the open, empty shells are s ll a ached to the rocks. What killed them? Then on Monday morning we found about 30 dead or dying crabs at Noetzie. It was horrible to watch them in their death throes. I wished I could put them out of their misery. We have no idea what has caused the mussel or crab deaths. I have reported it to DFFE, SANParks and the municipality. Noetzie houses have sep c tanks so perhaps there is one that is malfunc oning and leaked onto the beach? Or perhaps it was chemicals from swimming pool backwash? Normally pool backwash goes into a sewerage system, but there is no sewerage system at Noetzie. And there has been no red de in the Garden Route so that can be ruled out as a cause. So ja, this is something that makes me sad and cross at the start of my new year. I cha ed briefly about the marine die-offs to a guy coming back from a coastal hike, and he shook his head and said: “People.” We, the world's people, need to move away from our damaging lifestyle, because without the natural environment that give us water, air, soil, plants etc, we would cease to exist. A first step in this change is to cut down on greed. A good New Year's resolu on would be to say before every purchase: “I want it, but is it because of need or greed?” I like Canadian scien st David Suzuki's view: “Change is never easy and it o en creates discord, but when people come together for the good of humanity and the Earth, we can accomplish great things.”
