The Power of Faith I got cha ng to a man cu ng a neighbour’s grass at Noetzie last week and I was struck by his strong religious faith.

In the developed world Chris an faith is declining rapidly and many churches have closed, but in Africa there are 730 million followers and the number is growing. I guess the man I met, Lushan de Lange, is one of them. As we approach Christmas, I thought I would share his tale of faith.

Lushan went to school in Hornlee. When he was a teenager his mother lost her job when the Thesen’s Island sawmill closed.

“There was no money so I le school in Standard 6 to find work.”

He worked in a bakery, in MTO forestry, on a farm and as a gardener. His life was a li le rudderless and he dri ed into drugs.

One night Lushan had a dream that he believes led him to quit drugs. He dreamed he was in a glass bubble with dark water slowly rising. When it reached his neck he shouted “Jesus! ” over and over and the water receded.

The next day, payday, he went to the drug merchant as usual.

“I held the drugs in my hands, but my taste for k was gone.

From that day I was free of drugs. But, you know, my focus was not really on God, it was on making my life be er for myself.”

One fateful day he joined a protest to demand electricity at Oupad.

“The police came and they shot me with a rubber bullet. I fell down the hill and broke my leg.”

Despite two opera ons and a bone gra , the bone failed to heal.

He was on crutches for two years.

Eventually Lushan was sent to Cape Town where a specialist told him his leg would never heal. He was told to return later to have it amputated, but then Covid happened and he could not travel.

“In lockdown God came to me. My life was so narrow I only saw the mud, but God opened my eyes to see the good around me.

I learned gra tude. Someone gave me R20 for electricity and I saw how valuable that was because I had nothing. I also learned to take responsibility for my ac ons, not to blame someone else.

I realised I could move forward and I said: ‘God, I know you will make a way. I have faith’.”

When he went to Cape Town for the amputa on, Lushan says the surgeon did a final x-ray - and was astounded. During the 3-week lockdown, his bone had healed. Lushan believes it was a miracle.

With his leg healed, his life changed and Lushan now runs a small garden service. But the most important change he says is he no longer “lives for myself” but tries to live the Chris an way of love.

“Some people use you, but don’t make your heart dark because of that. God says go to the next person and help them.”

I’ve always liked Archbishop Tutu’s comment during the apartheid era about the Chris an focus on love: “I said to God, ‘Do I even have to love PW Botha?’ And God said: ‘Yes, even him’.”
