Black Ink and Blue Blood
I was behind a man in a queue recently who had a snake curling around his arm and a dagger dripping blood on the other arm.
Ta oos of course.
Ta oos have been fashionable for so long one hardly no ces them anymore – unless you are trapped in a queue.
I remember the first me I saw a full-body ta oo ages ago in Zanzibar. A Bri sh tourist we'd met had ta oos on both arms, his chest, back and legs. I had never seen anything like it.
What got me thinking about ta oos was a report I read this week about Swiss scien sts who have found that ta oo ink doesn't just stay in the skin, but travels through the body in the lymph. It accumulates in something called macrophages, crucial immune cells that destroy germs and help repair ssue. When the ink enters these cells, they cannot digest it and die.
Ta oo ink can stay in the immune system for years, and it gradually impairs the ability of the immune system to defend itself
That's a scary finding.
The researchers did the study on mice but say it could be relevant for humans too.
Glad I don't have any ta oos – although I did pretend to have one back in high school.
A bunch of us had gathered at our house a er school one a ernoon and one of the boys saw Sanni Metelerkamp's book George Rex of Knysna and asked about it. I told them about the story that George Rex was the illegi mate son of England's King George III, and that we were descended from him.
“So you've got, like, royal blood?” asked one boy
Yes, my sister Julie and I told him, enjoying ourselves.
The boys thought about this and then another one said: “But, you're just the same as everybody else. I mean, how would anyone know you've got royal blood?”
Off the top of my head I replied: “Well, all George Rex's descendants have a small crown ta ooed on their bu ocks soon a er they're born.” Julie, taking up the joke, nodded.
They didn't believe us and of course they wanted to see the ta oos, but we said nooit.
When I went to make coffee, I sneaked a note into my sister Sabrina's bedroom to tell her about the “royal ta oos” and to ask her to play along.
When Sabrina got home from school the boys immediately asked her if she had a crown on her bum. She played the part well, looking surprised and said words to the effect of: “Yes, how do you know?”
Well, that finished them. They didn't want to believe us, but the circumstan al evidence was persuasive.
Speaking of royalty and ta oos, they were apparently fashionable among European royals in the late 1800s to early 1900s. Britain's King Edward VII had a tat, as did King George V, Danish King Frederick IX, King Alexander of Yugoslavia, Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and others.
Although I didn't know it then, it seems our story of a royal ta oo wasn't so far-fetched a er all.
Though a ta ooed royal rump was a bit of a stretch.

What You’ll Do
• Keep the office running smoothly and support daily operational needs.
• Coordinate logistics, supplier bookings, and compliance documentation for upcoming events.
• Liaise with residents, partners, suppliers and internal teams to ensure seamless communication.
• Support event setup, accreditation, shuttle services and public area management during event weekends.
• Maintain systems, schedules, and reports using Project Management Software.
What We’re Looking For
• A proactive and self-motivated individual who demonstrates independence, accountability, strong initiative, and excellent critical thinking skills.
• Highly organized multitasker with strong communication skills.
• Proactive problem-solver who enjoys variety and teamwork.
• Strong administrative skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Experience in event coordination or operations is an advantage.
• Based in or near Knysna, with flexibility to work event weekends.
• Must have own reliable transport.
