Water Crisis: We Need a Change of Mindset
As I write, the water level in the Knysna River is so low that the pumps that keep water flowing into the town's reservoirs have been turned off
As it stands now, Knysna has only 25 days of water le .
It's a scary thought.
Unlike many other towns, Knysna has not dammed any rivers. It relies on water being pumped from rivers into storage reservoirs. Once pumping stops, the reservoir levels can only drop.
Most of our water comes from the Knysna River, pumped from the Charlesford sta on into the Akkerkloof Dam, the town's main storage reservoir. The latest no ce from the municipality was that Akkerkloof was only 27% full – equal to about 17 days' water. The smaller Glebe Dam holds another eight days' water, so a total of 25 days.
Mayor Thando Ma ka described the situa on as “serious” and said water restric ons would “intensify”
“We must all recognise that water resources are under pressure and everyone's co-opera on is vital,” he said.
Knysna went through a water crisis just months ago, but whereas that was caused by non-func oning water pumps and no back-ups, this crisis appears to be from below average rainfall. Only 5mm were recorded here in August, a record low for that month.
The municipality is urgently inves ga ng other water sources.
The resident-based and funded Knysna Infrastructure Group (KIG) is standing by to help the municipality
KIG founder Eugene Vermaak said: “We are praying for rain, but what is key now is to find other water sources in a short me.”
He said there were a number of springs that used to feed into the reservoirs, which needed to be assessed to see if they could be brought back online. There is also the possibility of ge ng boreholes drilled that may provide substan al water flows.
What many may not know is that Knysna's water licence allows a maximum volume of 300 litres a second to be pumped from the Knysna River
“And that is allowed only during the wet season, so they can't pump 300l/s every day. The average rate for the year is 167l/s a day,” Vermaak said.
Sedgefield's desalina on plant is being decommissioned, and the pumps will be used elsewhere. Knysna's desalina on plant is not in a state to be used.
“It'll probably never be recommissioned. A rough es mate is R20-million or more for a total rebuild.”
Desalina on uses a huge amount of electricity, meaning desalinated water costs two to four mes more than most other water sources.
Is there a long-term plan for Knysna's water supply?
Vermaak says a long-term plan was drawn up many years ago, which included damming a river – not sure which one – but that never happened.
Dams are controversial, not least because they o en cause serious environmental impacts.
A sobering thought: I read recently that all the water the planet will ever have is already here. We have to radically change our mindsets if we and our grandchildren are to have enough: bye-bye deep baths, watering gardens, having swimming pools, flushing the loo for every wee – and so much more.
