Swartvlei gets Green Coast Award
Well, I learned something new about our coast this week.
I knew about Blue Flag beaches of course, but it was the first me I had heard about the Green Coast Awards – and Swartvlei Beach has scored a Green Coast award for the second year running. Well done to them!
I learned online that the Wildlife and Environment Society of SA (Wessa) manages both the Green Coast and the Blue Flag Beach awards, but unlike the Blue Flag awards, which are an interna onal programme, the Green Coast programme is en rely a homegrown South African ini a ve. Both are made annually for the summer season.
I really like it because it appears to focus more on the natural environment than on visitor ameni es.
Wessa says the programme recognises “natural, less-developed coastal areas that balance biodiversity protec on with nature-based tourism”
Sounds sensible. We've all seen coastal development built to sa sfy human desires with li le regard for the natural environment.
So how it works is this: Anyone applying has to take on protec ng at least one of three main coastal themes: sensi ve habitats, sensi ve species or cultural heritage.
If you get the Green Coast award, your group has to do basic ecological monitoring that “encourages ci zen science ini a ves”
So there is quite a bit of work involved.
I've never been to Swartvlei Beach, but it looks beau ful from photographs: a long stretch of golden sand, green dunes with hardly any buildings.
The Green Coast awards have more than doubled this summer season, with 15 cer fied sites.
I read a quote on the Wessa website by marine biologist Dr Deborah Robertson-Andersson from Kei Mouth, also a Green Coast beach:
“We started as four people walking our coastline during lockdown and today we are over 400 residents working together. That's the spirit of the Green Coast – ci zen science in ac on.”
She is the Green Coast implementer of both Kei Mouth and Morgan Bay and is also on the na onal judging panel.
I asked her about the lockdown walk.
“Remember the exercise hour during lockdown? Well the whole village came out to the beach then and I think everyone started to appreciate what we had. There were exis ng groups, like the Kei Mouth Revival Group, but we decided to bring all of them together under the banner of the Green Coast Programme and meet the Green Coast goals,” Dr RobertsonAndersson said.
One of the advantages is that being part of the programme allows them direct access to na onal government.
“Morgan Bay had a big problem with sewage. We could go straight to na onal government and they could help us much faster. It definitely helps with sor ng out a number of issues.”
Wessa says the Green Coast Award allows for adequate monitoring and protec on of the site, while also allowing development of low-impact coastal tourism where appropriate.
Mike Denison, manager of Wessa's coastal and marine programme, makes this point: “As individuals we may not change the world, but we can make a difference where we live. When we join these smaller footprints together, it becomes an enormous investment in caring for our Earth.”
