A Second Elephant Seen in Knysna
They say there is only one Knysna elephant le – but I’ve seen a second one, a really spectacular specimen, standing next to George Rex Drive.
Okay, it is made of metal, but it is so lifelike, with one foot poised, trunk swung sideways and ears flapped forward, that it seems about to cross the road and have a drink in the lagoon.
I just love it.
I decided to find out about the ar st. I asked the golf ball sellers nearby and was told the ar st was “TK” and they gave me his phone number
His full name is Takura Machingambi and he has a workshop in White Loca on.
“I love animals, especially wild animals. My favourite TV channel is Natural World. I also like to read about wild animals,” TK said.
What really astonished me is that TK began making African animal sculptures without having seen them in the wild, just from what he had seen on TV and in books. The first me he saw any in the flesh was in 2022 when he visited a game park in Limpopo.
“There I saw lots of animals - elephant, zebra – but not rhino.”
Not surprising, with the rhino poaching rate s ll high. This saddens and angers TK.
“I don’t like poachers. They’re killing the rhino and elephants. I want these animals to grow so our kids in the future can see these species.”
TK was born and grew up in Mbare, a suburb of Harare.
“My father taught me how to do this artwork, but he passed away before I was experienced, but I con nued doing it. I wanted to go to Art School, but my mom did not have enough money for that.”
TK uses scrap metal for his art crea ons, and also makes smaller versions of animals because these obviously sell more easily than the large sculptures – and he needs income to support himself and his wife.
He began his artwork in 2011, but found there was a lot of compe on in Zimbabwe so moved around southern Africa in search of new markets. He stayed in Limpopo for a while, but says there was li le business there so in 2022 he moved to Ple where he worked with someone else.
Now he has come to Knysna to try his luck here.
It was a bit of a mission to get the elephant from White Loca on to George Rex Drive.
“I should have hired a crane but had no money for that, so I had to find guys to help me. It took eight of us to get it onto a trailer”
He hopes to get R150,000 for it, but is prepared to nego ate.
I think it would be great if, say, the Knysna Business Chamber could get their members to club together and buy this elephant for the town.
Elephants have become a symbol of Knysna, charisma c creatures that once roamed all over the southern Cape in huge herds, but se lers’ guns and sport hunters have wiped them out.

You are invited to join Albatross Shellhole on Sunday 9 November to commemorate all of Knysna’s fallen and injured during the conflicts of the past. As done last year, the bikes will lead, followed by the Knysna and Districts Pipe Band, the Veterans platoon, Sea Cadets Band, Sea Cadetes platoons and Knysna Fire Services and their tenders. The N2 will be closed from 10h00 to allow all participants to start gathering from 10h30. We should all be seated with enought time to spare, to honour the 11h000, 2 minute silence. If you wish to lay a wreath or cross in memory of someone dear to you, please supply your own. Thank you for showing respect.
