KAWS in the Doghouse
THE fur is flying at KAWS, the Knysna Animal Welfare Society, and it seems that poli cs and different worldviews among those involved with this charity organisa on are threatening its wellbeing – and perhaps even its existence.
I saw a KAWS advert in Ac on Ads saying the Na onal SPCA had given the 75-year-old charity a formal warning to comply fully with animal welfare regula ons.
“Failure to do so could risk our very existence,” it said.
I spoke to Robert Winn, a new KAWS commi ee member who had placed the ad.
“It's been bad,” he said, “with fights on social media and people swearing at me on WhatsApp. Some of the upset volunteers are trying to organise a coup.”

Three years ago the Na onal SPCA found KAWS did not comply with all welfare, hygiene and safety regula ons.
Winn says these problems were not sorted out so now the NSPCA has given them a formal warning to shape up or face prosecu on.
KAWS' kennels are at full capacity and there are no quaran ne facili es, so the organisa on has refused to take animals “not admi ed via KAWS protocol and admission procedures”. This has resulted in accusa ons that KAWS is uncaring. The organisa on's response is that all its decisions are based on animal welfare and the sustainability of the organisa on.
I spoke to a woman who is a long-term member of KAWS to find out her views. She did not want to be named, so let's call her Sue.
Sue believes a root cause of KAWS' problems is that there are two groups of animal welfare people “who don't see each other”. One group wants to save every animal; the other opts to euthanize them if no one adopts them.
“One group says: 'Ah that dog was so happy and lovely now he's dead because they euthanized him.' The other group says: 'We've had 300 dogs this month and found homes for 10, so what are we supposed to do?'”
“I understand both sides,” she says. “It's very hard to kill a healthy animal and I feel for the people holding that animal. But it's also hard to see an animal in overcrowded kennels where they're not happy”
In 2012 Sue helped rewrite the KAWS' cons tu on, and believes it is me for that to happen again, in par cular to look at their euthanasia policy
“I would urge KAWS to get a professional facilitator to help them do this.”
I have no doubt all those involved in KAWS love animals, but they have difficulty in accep ng that different people demonstrate this love in different ways.
I think Sue's advice of ge ng a facilitator is an excellent one, par cularly to help them update their policy on euthanasia.
If the infigh ng con nues, it may prevent KAWS from mee ng its welfare commitments and it may well be closed down.
And where would that leave the needy dogs and cats of Knysna?

Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Meeting of the members of the Knysna Animal Welfare Society WILL BE HELD AT: Knysna Hollow, Welbedacht, Knysna
6:00 pm on Wednesday, 26 November 2025
The agenda for the meeting will be as follows:
• To adopt the minutes of the previous Annual General Meeting
• To receive, consider and adopt the Annual Report of the Society’s Committee on the affairs of the Society
• To receive, consider and approve the Financial Statements of the Society together with the Auditor’s Report
• To elect the members of the Committee
• To deal with any relevant business or questions within the competence of the meeting and in respect of which the Chairperson has received prior written notice not less than 7 (seven) days before the Meeting
• To appoint an Auditor in compliance with the requirements of the Non-Profit Organisation Act of 1997
Members wishing to make themselves available for election to the Committee and who have been nominated by a member in good standing of the Society must submit their names in writing to the Chairperson, to arrive no later than 7 (seven) clear days prior to the Annual General Meeting. Each such submission must be accompanied by a written nomination and the nominee’s acceptance of her or his nomination and must be submitted to the Chairperson along with a brief, one-page curriculum vitae or motivation which shall be made available f o r m e m
