Choo-Tjoe Rendezvous
Know that old country song “I Walk the Line?”
Well that's what Alan McVi y and fellow engineers will be doing next week as one of their first steps in bringing the Garden Route's Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe back to life again.
“We have to walk the line to inspect it, see what condi on it's in and make sure there are no surprises. Then we have to work out the logis cs of how to fix it.”
McVi y, the CEO of Classic Rail and Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe, has finally been awarded a 25-year concession by Transnet to get the old tourist steam train between George and Knysna up and running again.
It's been a long ba le to win the concession, with tenacious McVi y hanging onto his dream for 20 years.
“During that me I put in three tenders and made two unsolicited bids. I feel like a Jack Russell that's been barking at a bus for 20 years and now I've finally caught it.”
McVi y and his team of experts certainly have their work cut out for them. The Choo-Tjoe has not run since the railway line was severely damaged in the 2006 floods.
Since then there have been rock falls and other damage, but they are confident the line can be repaired.
“If it's manmade, it can be fixed,” he quips.
With enough money, of course. He won't be quoted on the cost of the repairs just yet.
“Once we walk the line next week we'll be able to firm up the cost.”
The steam locomo ves and carriages have to be repaired as well. McVi y hopes to build a locomo ve workshop on the Garden Route, but for now they will be repaired in Germiston.
A cabinetmaker will repair the carriages, while a geotechnical expert will ensure the land that supports the rails and bridges is sound.
What is the biggest engineering challenge?
“Probably the bridges, Knysna and Kaaimans. They need to be analysed. The last track report was in 2010 so it all has to be revisited.” McVi y has not finalised the cost of Choo-Tjoe ckets either, but said the team was looking at the compara ve cost of ckets for other tourist ac vi es in the area. Their whole business plan is based on the cket sales.
The first sec on of line to be repaired, from Knysna to Sedgefield, will probably take six months, and the whole project about two and a half years.
What kept McVi y hanging onto the idea of ge ng the Choo-Tjoe running again for so long?
“I'm not a steam train boffin. I've never been in a steam train cab. But what I recognised was the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe brand. It fascinated me because it was such a success. In the 13 years it was th running it became the 10 most recognised tourist brand in South Africa, compe ng with icons like Table Mountain, Robben Island, Kruger Park. That was a huge achievement in just 13 years,” McVi y said.
The Choo-Tjoe was also rated one of the 10 most popular steam trains trips in the world.
“We've got a great team. They're young and passionate. It's going to be good fun.”
