• Matric (Grade 12) minimum.

Love Your Dog, Love Your Planet

My friend Wendy took her lovely ridgeback to the vet the other day and he obediently went to sit on the scale right away.

Clever dog.

He weighed 47.3kg - all of it packed muscle. Believe me, you can expect a bruise when this pooch knocks into you when he's excited, and if he stands on your bare foot, oh my word.

What is astonishing is that this magniﬁcent specimen gets his sculptured body mostly from a diet of boring pellets, those “scienﬁcally balanced” balls that cost a small fortune.

He doesn't regard them as boring. In fact Wendy has to put him outside while she ﬁlls his bowl because he drools so much in ancipaon of his grub.

Pet pellets are a clever invenon – but there are hidden costs apart from those that hit your wallet.

Recently researchers from the University of Nongham published their research that compared the environmental impact of dog pellets made from animal products with those made from plant products.

I didn't even know you could get plant-based dog pellets.

The researchers examined 31 types of “complete” dry dog food on the shelves of UK supermarkets and grouped them into red meat-based (beef and lamb), poultry-based, and plant-based.

Then they examined 33 key ingredients in all of them and assessed the impact these would have on the amount of land and water used, carbon emissions produced, polluon of water from farming, and air polluon from ferlizer chemicals reacng with oxygen and water. This last one was new to me.

One astonishing result was that if you feed your dog meat-based pellets, over its lifeme it would need 57 football ﬁelds of land to produce the food that went into the pellets.

That's just one dog, and apparently there are 470 million pet dogs in the world.

If you feed your dog plant-based pellets it would need just 1.4 football ﬁelds.

And then there are the greenhouse gases: beef-based pellets produced 31 kilograms of greenhouse gases for every 1000 kcals (what we laymen simply call “calories”), whereas plant-based pellets produced just 2.8 kg. Huge diﬀerence.

Lamb-based pellets used over 500 litres of water and beef-based over 600 litres for every 1000 kcals, while plant-based foods used 249 litres.

Water and air polluon was between 14 and 16 mes lower in plantbased dog food than in beef-based.

“Okay,” I hear you say, “so plant-based dog food is far beer for the planet than meat-based, but is it as nutrious? Will Fido get all he needs?”

Yes, say the researchers, except for two things: iodine and the B-vitamins, which they say can easily be supplemented.

Dogs are omnivorous, so can digest plants, and many ﬂourish on a plant-based diet, but best to check with your vet if Fido can go vegetarian.

Most people love dogs, not least because they adore us even if we don't deserve it. It's more diﬃcult to “love the planet”, isn't it?

But as the late Jane Goodall said, you cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you.

And, she said, you can choose the type of impact you make.
