Dr Jane Goodall: Champion of Planet Earth
Jane Goodall's death at 91 last week brought an outpouring of love, admira on and sadness from around the world, with many hailing her as an “icon”
She regarded this public adora on as “a mystery”
“I don't know why. I think they trust me. I think they like the values I've always had, but I don't know.”
Many say it is because Jane was a champion of all that was good in the world.
She moved from a young primatologist who revolu onized how science saw primates, to a woman who fought to “save the planet”.
I first heard about Jane Goodall when shown a film at school about this young Bri sh woman who was studying chimpanzees in the Tanzanian bush. I already loved the wild, and thought Jane had the best job ever
We watched a chimp crushing leaves to make a “sponge” to get water from the fork of a tree, and s cking a twig into a termite mound, pulling it out and ea ng the termites clinging to the s ck.
Chimps were making tools! It was a revolu onary discovery. Un l then it had been accepted that what separated humans from animals was that we could make tools.
Jane also discovered that chimps had “ social complex emo ons and structure once thought unique to humans”.
Born in London in 1934, she had always loved animals and at the age of 10 announced that she wanted to “go to Africa”
“Girls back then didn't dream of anything like that,” she said.
Most people laughed at her but her mother encouraged her “I was lucky. A different mother might have crushed that.”
A er working as a waitress she saved enough to fly to Nairobi in 1957, where she met archaeologist Louis Leakey. It was Leakey who set Jane on the path to becoming a primatologist when he suggested she study chimps in the Gombe Stream Na onal Park in Tanzania. Leakey believed studying primates could provide valuable insights into how early humans had behaved.
That was the beginning of her astonishing career. She lived in a tent and spent every day following the chimps, recording everything she saw. Jane made another revolu onary discovery: chimps, always thought to be vegetarian, were also meat eaters and hunted smaller primates like monkeys.
She was awarded a doctorate from Cambridge University in 1965, established the Jane Goodall Ins tute to promote conserva on, wrote 32 books, was in 40 films and travelled the world promo ng conserva on and climate ac on.
