Trump’s Trumpeting Not Scientiﬁc

A friend of the family has a daughter who was diagnosed with ausm. He said they had to learn how to deal with her condion as they went along, and some things were trickier than others.

I had expected him to describe something serious, but instead he said with a grin: “For instance, she loves peanut buer and jam sandwiches, but she insists that the jam has to go on the bread ﬁrst and then the peanut buer on top of the jam. Have you ever tried to spread peanut buer on top of jam? Believe me it's hard.”

By the way, I learned that for some ausc people, controlling the way their food is presented provides them with a sense of empowerment in a world where so much is confusing and overwhelming.

So what made me think of this?

It was old Donald Trump telling the world that pregnant women should not take paracetamol because it could increase the risk of ausm in their babies.

Apparently that's just not true. Trump's statements were met with a barrage of cricism from the scienﬁc and medical communies who said there was no evidence of this.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists said studies had been done to determine the eﬀects of taking paracetamol during pregnancy. None of them had produced any clear evidence that paracetamol aﬀected the unborn babies.

So why did Trump say this? Who knows.

Many medics describe Trump's statements as “fear-mongering”.

What interested me while I was reading about this was that there apparently has been a big increase in the number of children diagnosed with ausm in the USA: from one child in 150 children in 2000 to one child in 31 children in 2022.

And this is the same in several other countries.

“Wow,” I thought, “what on earth has caused this increase?”

Well, it appears that a large part of the reason is that they've changed the goalposts for diagnosis. Researchers and medics are now casng a wider net which now includes people that they would not have included in the past because they had far fewer ausm symptoms.

Also, people who were diagnosed with Asperger's are now counted as having ausm. All this pushes the numbers up.

Added to that is that there is an increased awareness about ausm, so more people are being diagnosed than would have been in the past. As one doctor said, what looked like a dramac increase in ausm cases was a dramac increase in diagnoses.

So there you have it.

I feel sorry for pregnant women. They get bombarded with so much unfounded stuﬀ

I was surprised to learn that actor Sir Anthony Hopkins has Asperger's. I rather liked what he said about his diagnoses: “My philosophy is: It's none of my business what people say of me and think of me. I am what I am and I do what I do. I expect nothing and accept everything. And it makes life so much easier.”

Bully for him!

OUTCOME

The Knysna Infrastructure Group acknowledges the NCOP’s decision not to dissolve the Knysna Council.

While KIG remains a-political, we consider it important to issue an ofﬁcial statement to clarify our stance in light of recent social media discussions across various platforms and among a diverse audience.

The following needs to be clariﬁed:

1. Since October 2024, KIG has clearly opposed a Section 139 (1)(c) intervention, believing it does not address Knysna's core issues. Instead, KIG has consistently advocated for a Section 139 (1)(b) intervention.

Section 139(1)(b) serves as a crucial safeguard against municipal collapse, allowing for the direct assumption of executive powers (in other words the administrative function executed by the ofﬁcials) to ensure essential services continue to be delivered, and the Administrator can be appointed for as long as it takes to restore such services.

2. KIG submitted detailed proposals to Minister Bredell and requested meetings twice. Both of these offers were disregarded. (Copy of our submission is available on https://www.kisg.org.za/)

3. Allegations that those who were opposed to the Section 139 (1) (c) such as “GKBC, Afriforum and KIG, together with smaller (some unknown groups) “lost the plot” and “did not understand that a Section 139 (1) (b) was not on the table”, must be disregarded with the contempt they deserve. The KIG respectfully rejects any efforts to marginalise the perspectives of groups referred to as “smaller or lesser known”; these groups represent a signiﬁcant portion of the Knysna community and, as residents, are entitled to an equal voice. It is well understood that a Section 139 (1) (b) was not under consideration. However, we reiterated our initial submissions, which again – were disregarded.

4. The Minister dismissed all submissions and attempted to proceed with the placement under administration in terms of Section 139 (1) (c), there for rejecting the public input. As a result, the PEOPLE decided not to support this approach and indicated their preference for a program that addresses the root cause.

5. The allocation of funding is not contingent upon a Section 139 (1) (c) intervention under the Constitution; however, the WCPG made it conditional prior to disbursing any funds. This requirement was further emphasized during discussions between the WCPG and the supplier of the 43 pumps, where administrative oversight was established as a prerequisite for any form of assistance.

6. The Knysna Infrastructure Group reafﬁrms its full commitment to serving the residents of Greater Knysna and will continue to collaborate with all stakeholders, including the Knysna Municipality, its Council, and Administration, to ensure effective service delivery for all.

7. Our priorities for remain:

a. Securing and improving the Knysna Estuary Health by limiting contamination

b. Water security for the Great Knysna

c. Securing Electrical network

d. Improvement of Road Works
