Cake, Candles and Champagne
Sho! So much horrible news: government corrup on, assassina ons of whistle-blowers, war, starving children. It's depressing.
So today I'm cha ng about what are usually happy events – birthdays. This week we celebrated my sister Julie's birthday, plus the fact that three family members are now all the same age: my sister, sister-in-law and me.
We had a low-key but lovely celebratory lunch at beau ful Noetzie. As children Julie and I loved it when her birthday came round on rd23 September, because being born just 11 months apart meant we were then the same age for three weeks.
We thought this was great, and walked around declaring to anyone who would listen: “We're both six but we're not twins! Hee-hee-hee.”
Children's birthday par es were simple back then, but they have become so elaborate and over-the-top, especially in the USA where people even hire party planners – for a kid's party!
It's difficult to assess how long people have been celebra ng birthdays because many cultures had no wri en languages so there are no records of many early socie es. And of course many ancient socie es had no calendars so they would have had no way of remembering exact birth dates.
One website says ancient Egyp ans and Mesopotamians celebrated birthdays, but only the nobility, and apparently early Jewish and Chris an tradi ons did not focus on birthdays, nor did Hinduism.
But I think it is safe to say that while many religions and cultures may not have thought it important to mark birthdays, it is and probably has always been a universal prac ce to mark a person's death.
There are probably as many different customs marking a person's death as there are cultures, but the underlying purpose seems similar: to bring people together to grieve, to acknowledge the person who has died, and to provide some comfort to the living.
There o en are rituals to help the dead person's spirit make the transi on to the next realm.
Back to birthdays. It seems that modern birthday celebra ons in the th West came out of the late 18 century German tradi on of Kinderfeste, when a child was presented with a cake on his or her birthday topped with candles that marked the child's age.
It was not everyone who could afford this luxury, but with the Industrial Revolu on in the UK and Europe and mechanisa on of agriculture, food products became cheaper and so the prac ce of birthday cakes was accessible to a greater number of people.
Some over-the-top birthdays?
English TV personality Simon Cowell rented an historic manor in England, ferried his 400 guests there in a fleet of limousines, projected his face onto the manor wall, provided tons of lavish food and had a shark tank in one of the bathrooms. Cost? £1million (R23.3 million).
Beyoncé gave her daughter a first birthday party with a $2,000 cake (R34,600) and an $80,000 (R1.3 million) Barbie doll encrusted with diamonds.
