Lions Karoo to Coast Mountain Bike Challenge Sunday, 21 September 2025

The Lions Clubs of Knysna and Uniondale are proud to present the Lions Karoo to Coast Mountain Bike Challenge. Since its inception in 1999, this event has raised funds for people in need in our area, with the Sightﬁrst Project and the South African Guide Dog Association as primary beneﬁciaries.

Event Details

• Start: Uniondale – 07:25 SUNDAY 21 SEPTEMBER

• Route: Cyclists traverse Prince Alfred’s Pass via Kom se Pad, Simola and Salt River Road.

• Cut-off Times:

o Kom se Pad / Knysna turnoff – 14:30

o Knysna High School ﬁeld (ﬁnish line) – 16:00

The ﬁrst rider is expected in Knysna around 10:00, with the last riders arriving by 16:30.

WHATS NEW THIS YEAR? – Registration and the ﬁrst Wine & Wheels Expo in Uniondale on Friday 19th Sept (16:00 – 20:00) and also on Saturday 20th September from 13:00 to 20:00. Live music, wine for sale, chill area, food and cool gifts for sale as well as a mini Paintball range and various cycle related stands. Everyone welcome!

Important Safety Notice

Motorists and riders are urged to exercise extreme caution. The Pass cannot be closed to trafﬁc on race day, but we strongly encourage all motorists to avoid the Pass and the rider route between 06:30 and 16:00 on Sunday, 21 September.

To reduce trafﬁc interference:

• A temporary bridge has been built under the culvert on the N2 near Salt River.

• After the culvert, cyclists will use a single lane until turning into Waterfront Drive and ﬁnishing at the Knysna High School ﬁeld (west of the Astron Garage).

• Astron Garage will remain open, with access from the east side only

Road Closures & Restrictions

• The route is NOT closed to oncoming traffic/residents. Riders must stay left at all times and follow the instructions of traffic officers.

• No participants or supporters may drive over Prince Alfred’s Pass / Kom se Pad / Gouna / Simola on race morning.

• The Pass will be closed by trafﬁc control on the Uniondale side from 06:30. Late arrivals will not be allowed through.

• Support vehicles may not return to Knysna via the Pass – please drive via George.

• There are no supporter viewing points on the route for safety reasons.

• Trafﬁc leaving Uniondale after 07:15 may be delayed until around 08:10 while cyclists depart. Supporters are advised to either leave before 07:15 or enjoy breakfast in Uniondale during this time.

Community Impact

This event not only supports local communities - but also provides a much-needed economic boost to Uniondale, George, and Knysna at the end of winter. Many non-proﬁt organisations volunteer as marshals and water point operators—please treat them with kindness and appreciation.

Is This Good or Bad for Knysna?

So it has ﬁnally happened: the Western Cape Government has placed Knysna Municipality under administraon for “failing to fulﬁll its obligaons”

This means the provincial government will appoint an administrator to take over the day-to-day running of the municipality and all legislave and execuve funcons of council.

It also means that the council will be dissolved. All the councillors will lose their jobs.

But all the municipal oﬃcials will remain in place and work under the administrator

Then in 90 days, when this administrator is meant to have sorted out the municipality's problems, a new council will be elected.

The maer is not yet ﬁnal. Province's decision has to go before the Naonal Council of Provinces (NCOP) who must decide by September 27 whether they th agree.

If the NCOP disagrees, then placing the municipality under administraon won't happen.

The big queson is: will being under administraon sort out Knysna Municipality's problems?

Some councillors support this, others oppose it.

Councillor Susan Campbell believes dissolving the council will achieve nothing. She says the provincial government should have done this back in 2023/24 when things in the council were bad.

“That was the me to put Knysna under administraon. Now we've got a decent mayor, the audit outcome has improved, ﬁnances are beer, so why put us under administraon now? It's not going to solve the problem. They've chosen the polical opon, to replace council, and that will achieve nothing,” she said.

Councillor Mark Willemse, Speaker in the council, agrees.

“I would have deﬁnitely supported pung Knysna under administraon 18 months ago when things were very bad. There were cadre appointments, irregular expenditure and a very poor audit outcome. was the me to do That it, but Province did not do it,” Willemse said.

“Now in 2024/25 we've seen a vast improvement under the present mayor Things are turning around, slowly, but are deﬁnitely moving forward,” he said.

Campbell believes if the provincial government were really serious about pung things right in Knysna Municipality, they should have chosen a far beer opon under the Constuon.

The provincial government made the decision under Secon 139(1)(c) of the Constuon. She says it would have been beer had they done so under Secon 139(1)(b).

“Under 139(1)(b) the council would stay in place, but the Province would take over certain funcons of the municipality that are not working properly,” she said.

The provincial government could send in a team to take over management of Knysna's water supply for instance, and sanitaon and roads - and whatever else is not working.

“Province could send as many people as they like for as long as necessary to sort out problems. Could be 2 years or 3 months. But the council sll stays in place. That is how to address problems – if you are not playing polics.”

Both Willemse and Campbell point out it is not councillors who carry out the day-to-day running of the municipality, but the oﬃcials. Councillors are prohibited from interfering.

“The same people who are too incompetent to sort out our sewerage pumps and who failed on water delivery, will sll be in place,” Campbell said. Holding thumbs whatever happens really is best for Knysna.
