When the Sun and Moon Come Together
Got a text from an old friend on Monday: “Smaaked the moon last night. Nothing could eclipse it!”
He was of course referring to Sunday's lunar eclipse. Aw, you groan, weak pun, but it made me chuckle.
People all over Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia were able to see this eclipse. As we looked up at the moon, gradually ge ng “eaten up” by the Earth's shadow, I liked the idea that millions all over the world were also outside watching the eclipse.
I watched it in Kalk Bay, but only for short periods at a me as there was an icy south-easter blowing that froze your bones.
But what a sight! It rose across False Bay when it was s ll light, a yellow moon with a perfectly curved bite out of its bo om. The eclipse had already begun.
We were not as lucky as my Ac on Ads sister Julie who had the benefit of the dark Noetzie skies. She sent us beau ful pics of the “blood moon” when the eclipse was at its maximum and looked orangey-red, whereas ours in brightly-lit Kalk Bay was pre y pale. S ll, it was exci ng.
I love eclipses. I suppose it has something to do with their rarity, but also because we are witnessing something really huge: the movement of cosmic bodies cas ng cosmic-sized shadows on each other.
Lunar eclipses occur only at full moon when the Earth is aligned precisely between the sun and the moon, and the Earth's shadow falls across the moon.
Have you ever wondered why there aren't lunar eclipses every full moon? It's because the moon's orbit around the Earth is not in a flat plane, but is angled at about five degrees. That means the moon o en goes above or below the Earth's shadow.
And the “blood moon” colour? During an eclipse there is s ll some light from the sun that passes through the Earth's atmosphere and lights the moon's surface very dimly. Apparently colours with short wavelengths – blues and violets – get sca ered by the Earth's atmosphere more easily than those with longer wavelengths, the reds and oranges. So it's the longer wavelength reds and oranges that make it to the moon's surface during an eclipse, giving it a reddish colour.
There are between zero and five lunar eclipses a year and between two and five solar eclipses. But fewer people are likely to see a total solar eclipse because they are very seldom visible from the same loca on. If you've been lucky enough to see a total solar eclipse, no one is likely to see another one from that same spot for nearly 400 years!
In ancient mes many cultures and religions created myths around eclipses. One author classified these myths into four categories: a celes al being, usually a monster, is a emp ng to destroy the sun; the sun and its lover the moon are figh ng; the sun is angry, or sad or sick.
It's the fourth one I like best: when the sun and moon make love, they discreetly hide themselves in darkness.
