Curious Cases of Clam Calamities
Many of you will have seen the mass of shellfish that washed out at Robberg in Ple last week.
What a spectacular sight! Thousands upon thousands. Imagine being a strandloper. You would eat yourself dik!
I wasn't there, but from the photographs I thought they were white mussels, but they are clams, similar in size.
I didn't even know we got clams in South Africa but apparently we have several species around our coast.
I spoke to marine scien st Kyle Smith from SANParks Garden Route and asked what had caused the clam washout.
“I don't think anyone really understands why this happens,” he said. “There were clam washouts in 2018, 2019 and 2020, and now this one, mostly at Robberg beach in the corner. They did all occur a er big sea events, but then we have had several big sea events with no washouts,” Kyle said.
Curious. So big seas alone can't be the cause.
Kyle was unable to see last week's event himself, but he was there the three previous mes.
The real biggie was 2019 when an es mated 11.5 million washed out. I was gobsmacked to learn that so many shellfish could be under the sand at Robberg. Who would have thought!
In 2019 when Kyle and his team wanted to work out how many clams there were, they walked transects from the high water mark to the low water mark and marked out quadrants in different places to help get a rough es mate.
“There were millions. They were in different layers: some were just one layer deep and others were 30cm deep, shells upon shells.”
The dead clams covered an area of just under 6,000sq m.
So apart from high seas, what else could cause the clam washouts?
“I think the wave direc on and strength is important in crea ng the inshore turbulence to dislodge the clams, but the density of the clams may also be important,” Kyle says.
So this idea is if there are really a lot of clams under the sand, the sheer number of them might loosen the sand, making it more suscep ble to being washed away when the big waves occur.
And why are there so many clams? Were they always so abundant?
Well, when condi ons are just right for a species – like having a lot of food - their numbers increase.
Clams are filter feeders, trapping microscopic food par cles they filter out from the seawater. The par cles can be plankton or minute bits of dead plant or animal ma er, or bacteria.
Seal colonies in the area have become bigger, so Kyle wonders if the increased amount of seal poo in the sea may be providing clams with increased nutrients.
In the end, he says, there are s ll too many unanswered ques ons to be able to say exactly why these clam washouts happen.
While reading about clams today, I came across this quote by US poet Mary Oliver: “There were mes over the years when life was not easy, but if you're working a few hours a day and you've got a good book to read and you can go outside to the beach and dig for clams, you're okay.”

DAMON TERBLANCHE TO REPRESENT SOUTH AFRICA AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN SWITZERLAND
Damon Terblanche, a young man from Dam se Bos in Knysna, has been selected to represent South Africa in the World Championships Cross C o u n t r y i n C r a n s M o n t a n a , Valais, Switzerland, from 8 to 14 September 2025.
This honour was not handed to Damon on a plate, but is the culmination of years of hard work and many hours of cycling. Damon started his cycling career at Knysna Sport Academy at the age of 14. Coach Paulus recognised his talents and led him to the point where Marike Vreken took over and transformed his coaching to a more professional level.
Damon’s journey include many highlights and among these were the donation of a very expensive bicycle by Mr Ryan Habib at the Karoo to Coast. Now he was a changed man. Damon won the EXARRO category at the Cape Epic in 2025 after ending 2nd in 2024. He won the Wine to Whales twice and the senior amateur men’s category in Sani to Sea once.
Damon was selected in 2023 and in 2025 to the SA Championships and represented South Africa in the African Championships in 2023 and 2025. In 2025 his life long dream and goal became a reality
He flies from Cape Town, South Africa on Sunday 31 August 2025.
Damion’s dream nearly crumbled when he was informed that this is a self funded team and that the price tag is nearly R100 000.00. Chin on chest and with tears in his eyes he realised that he would never be able to afford this dream. Knysna Sport Academy and Marike Vreken was not prepared to give up on him. The wheels were set in motion and a Swiss Charity group sponsored him a great new bicycle and the flight tickets. His chin lifted. Still R57000.00 short, (R5000.00 for KIT, R22000.00 SA Cycling fees, Visa R3500 00, transport in SA and Switzerland R11000 00 and accommodation and pocket money R15000.00), but Knysna Municipality gave R15 000.00 and the Knysna Daily Face Group’s members and Knysna community members paid in R20 000.00. The balance is covered by Knysna Sport Academy, LIBC, Derek Iken and Damon’s own savings.
WOW KNYSNA, you made it happen for Damon. A sincere THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to this dream of a humble youngster from Dam se Bos Knysna.
