People of the Kalahari
Years ago in the late 80s I met an old man called Regopstaan.
He was a bushman, living in a garden shed in Kuruman, a town on the edge of the Kalahari.
This week I was reminded of him a er reading an ar cle headlined: Namibia's Forgo en Genocide: How bushmen were hunted and killed under German colonial rule.
Regopstaan was there in that genocide. He had not been born yet, but was s ll in his mother's womb when his parents fled the German massacres. No one knows how many bushmen were killed in Namibia, but es mates are between 8000 and 12000 people.
I met Regopstaan while I worked on The Star in Johannesburg. I had been sent to do a story about a Kuruman farmer who had “given” part of his land to a group of bushmen where they could live “tradi onally”.
“Find the catch,” my news editor told me.
We did: there were tourists who paid to see the bushmen, and that money went to the farmer.
Anyway, it was there that I met Regopstaan's son Dawid Kruiper Dawid and Regopstaan, the leader of the Khomani clan, were both ǂ born and lived with their clan in what later became the Kalahari Gemsbok Park. The bushmen were eventually forced to leave.
That evening cha ng around the fire Dawid told me he was grateful to be living on the Kuruman farm, and didn't mind the tourists, but what his heart ached for was to return to the real Kalahari.
His face lit up: “Daar waar die duine rooi is, en die korhaan skreeu in die aand”
I loved the way he spoke, and I felt sad for him and his small clan.
By the way, Dawid wanted to be called a bushman, and said the word “San” didn't mean anything to him.
We slept around the fire that night, and the next day went to meet Regopstaan, who was living in the farmer's garden shed.
He was wrapped in a blanket, smoking a pipe.
He explained that his parents had come from southern Namibia, but when the Germans began killing the bushmen, his father and pregnant mother fled. They eventually came to rest at Twee-Rivieren in the Kalahari where he was born.
Regopstaan had a dream that his people would return to the Kalahari one day, and eventually they did.
It was a long, tough ba le, led mainly by Dawid with lawyers, and in 1999 their land claim was partly successful. They got 34,728 ha outside the park and in 2002 another 57,903ha inside the park on a contractual basis.
Regopstaan did not live to see this, but at least the land res tu on process had begun before he died. He had apparently said when the land was returned to the Khomani, “all the rivers will flow again” ǂ
I covered the official land res tu on ceremony and it was sunny and warm. But according to a UCT account, not long a erwards there was “significant rainfall” and both the Nossop and Molopo Rivers, usually just sandy beds, flowed again, “bringing the southern Kalahari to life”. I like to think Regopstaan's spirit was around to see it.
