to Clinching a Choo-Tjoe Deal
Two sounds I associate with Knysna from years ago are the hooter from the old sawmill and the toot-toot of the train crossing the lagoon. Both disappeared years ago, but one is due to return: the sound of the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe chuffing across the bridge. So exci ng!
There have been many calls for this tourist train to return to service, many rumours that it was going to happen, and many disappointments when it didn’t.
But now Transnet says it is in the final stages of nego a ng a 25-year contract with a private concessionaire to run the train between George and Knysna, and is set to make an announcement soon.
BTW, no tender was awarded, as reported in some media earlier this year. Transnet called for bids from the public and have gone through a process of selec ng the best of the bids. Government does the same with private companies for building renewable energy plants.
Once the contract has been signed, the concessionaire will have to repair the 67km railway line that was badly damaged in the 2006 floods, when the Choo-Tjoe stopped running.
Transnet has not put a price on the repairs, or a me scale, because much of the railway is so overgrown it could not be properly inspected. But the parts they did assess were “in a poor and damaged condi on” that required “intensive construc on and repair work”
The concessionaire will have to fork out many millions to repair the rails and bridges, and to refurbish the steam trains, carriages and railway sta ons.
But bidders have obviously done their sums and know they will be able to make a profit. Transnet’s bid document says the Choo-Tjoe carried between 120,000 to 150,000 passengers a year, so plenty of paying customers.
About 70% were foreign tourists. Not surprising. Steam train travel is a huge tourist sector interna onally, and here you have a steam train on one of the most scenic rail routes in the world.
Sadly, when the fire index is high the steam engines won’t be allowed to operate, so diesel locomo ves will pull the carriages instead.
Not quite the same, nê?
Transnet describes the George-Knysna railway line as “an important and unique part of South Africa’s rail heritage”. It certainly is.
What I didn’t know was when the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe was opera ng, it was the only working steam train in Africa. It was also ranked in the top 10 rail tour experiences in the world.
Isn’t that something?
Given these facts – which Transnet itself provides – it is really astonishing that the organisa on has taken so long to get it going again.
I also learned the quaint names of some of the sta ons en route: Bleshoender, Dennebos, Duiwerivier, Serpen ne and Mieliebrug.
Bet there is a story behind each name.
Travel author Paul Theroux, who wrote several books on train journeys, gives his view on the a rac on of train travel: “Trains tap into an ancient longing for mystery and adventure in our lives.”
Perhaps this is part of the a rac on of the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe. Can’t wait to go on its first trip.
