Plett’s New Arrival
A strapping young male has arrived in the Ple enberg Bay area. He’s big and he’s tough, and if you try to mess with him, you will come short.
He is a four-year-old hippo from Cape Town’s False Bay Nature Reserve that had to leave home because his father was giving him a seriously hard me. He bears the scars from his father’s huge teeth.
The thing is, hippo males are highly territorial and claim a sec on of river or vlei as their own. Females are welcome, but no other males.
In historical mes when there were hippos all over South Africa, young males that were ousted by older males would simply wander away and set up their own territory in a new river or vlei. Of course that cannot happen today because humans have taken over the land where hippos once roamed freely.
So Cape Town municipality’s biodiversity management department decided it was me to catch the young male and take him to a new home: the 2200ha Ple enberg Bay Game Reserve.
Back in the1980s game capture teams used to dart hippo with an immobilizing drug fired from a helicopter. This was expensive, very stressful for the hippo and dangerous for the capture team.
Over me game managers have become smarter and now use “passive” capture techniques that usually involve pu ng bundles of lucerne in a crate near where hippo live. When they come out of the water at night to graze, one or two usually wander into the crate to feast on the lucerne. A er several nights the hippo become relaxed about going into the crate. This is when the capture team sneaks up and shuts the door. The crate is loaded onto a truck and the hippo taken to its new home.
The Cape Town municipality did not give details about how this hippo was caught, except to say they had used “a combina on of a specially designed capture boma and transport crate”
The hippo arrived at its new home last Wednesday
I spoke to Robert Kompi from the Ple Game Reserve who said once the crate had been opened the hippo ran straight into the dam.
“I think he is so happy to be here because in Cape Town the dominant male was abusing him and he has bite marks on him,” Kompi said.
“Now he is alone in the dam and can do whatever he wants. There are a lot of dams here, and the hippo walk around at night so he may walk to another dam.”
He is being monitored to see how he acclima ses to his new home and integrates with the resident hippo pod – all females.
I love the sound hippos make, sort of loud honking grunts. Always makes me smile. I knew a ranger in Zimbabwe who was trying to work out how he could record a hippo and make it into his doorbell ring tone. If he succeeded I can imagine there must have been some seriously startled delivery guys.
