Moon Landing Miracle
As I sit here wri ng, it is the 56th anniversary of the first moon landing.
I remember it vividly: 21st July 1969. It was a school morning. The principal’s voice came over the intercom saying the moon landing was an historic event so he was broadcas ng the radio to all classes. We sat dead quiet and listened to the crackling voice of astronaut Neil Armstrong: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
It was so exci ng! The voice of a man on the moon coming into our classrooms.
I recently watched a NatGeo video, Moon Landing: Declassified, which describes the moon mission as “humankind’s greatest adventure, but also its riskiest”
Because US President John Kennedy had said in 1961 that America should put a man on the moon before the end of the 60s, there was a lot of pressure.
“Few ques oned the wisdom – or the dangers – of racing to the moon in just nine years,” the video said.
There were several Apollo tests in the lead-up to the moon landing. During the first, a frayed wire caused a fire and all three astronauts died.
Armstrong nearly died while training to fly the moon-landing module. The cra suddenly went out of control. He ejected and came down by parachute, moments before it crashed down in flames.
There were over 400,000 people in the US working on the moon-landing mission, seven days a week.
Eventually the moon team of Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Mike Collins were rocketed into space. Four days later Armstrong and Aldrin sealed themselves inside the smaller lunar spacecra and undocked from the mother ship. From that moment they had just 12 minutes to land on the moon before they ran out of fuel for the descent.
And they ran into problems.
An alarm went off. The computer had stopped performing some crucial tasks. But Houston said although the computer was overloaded, it was s ll flying the spacecra so they should con nue.
“Then a new danger loomed. The computer was taking them towards a crater strewn with boulders the size of cars.”
Armstrong took control from the autopilot and searched for a safe landing place. Minutes cked by and the fuel dropped lower
A light came on: they had just 60 seconds of fuel le .
Everyone at Houston held their breath.
Then Armstrong radioed: “That looks like a good area.” So calm, as if he were choosing a camping spot - but his heart rate had spiked to 150 beats a minute.
A er landing they had two hours to collect samples, deploy scien fic equipment and take photographs.
When they got back into the spacecra they found the engine’s starter switch was broken. They had to fix it or they would be stranded and die on the moon.
Aldrin jammed a felt- pped pen into the console. The engine started.
An elderly Aldrin said on the video if they had not been able to fix it, “we would last un l our oxygen was used up, then pass out and that’s it.”
It is truly astonishing they all lived to tell the tale.
