Fynbos Fragrance
Have any of you no ced the wonderful smell in some places along the Garden Route?
We used to get so excited as kids when we smelt it when travelling to Knysna for the summer holidays because we knew the smell meant we were nearly there.
I remember asking my parents about the smell and they said it came from the plants.
Who would have thought that years later people would be dis lling the oils from some of these plants for the perfume industry?
Knysna hor culturist Nanna Joubert is one of them.
She became involved in extrac ng essen al oils from fynbos when she was part of a research project for the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve.
“Part of the func on of a biosphere reserve is about looking at how people and nature can live together and make a living from nature in a way that does not harm it,” Nanna said.
The object of the research was to have financial spin-offs from fynbos for the local community
I recently had a chance to smell the li le bo les of essen al oils she has extracted. They were lovely, and unusual.
“I had laboratory tests done which show you what the molecules are, their aroma c cons tuents. I think a few of them have poten al. I’ve checked with some natural perfumers and they have been awed. One woman in par cular was very excited.”
There are different ways to extract oils from fynbos, but it mostly seems to be done using steam in a dis lling machine. Steam, passing through the plant material, vaporises the oils that are then cooled and condensed into a liquid.
So which plants did she test?
To my surprise some were from the ever-las ng family. I never would have expected these dry flowers to have oils, but Nanna explained that the oils come from the leaves, not the flowers.
She tested four species, of which Helichrysum foe dum – also known as “s nking yellow everlas ng” – was the one that the natural perfumers loved.
Unfortunately, funding has run out for the Gouritz Biosphere perfume project, but the informa on she has gathered is s ll there.
It is a slow process and the reality is that funders want a business up and running quickly
There already are several people producing essen al oils along the Garden Route, all small-scale opera ons of a few hectares.
Nanna has a dream of developing a Garden Route Scent Route, where people can travel between niche oil dis llers and experience the different fynbos oils.
“Something similar to a wine route. And like wine, the terroir does affect essen al oils. It would be fabulous if we could do that.”
I agree. Apart from crea ng jobs and being a tourist draw card, it would be wonderful to have something unique.

Sadly, I’ve no ced in recent years that the aroma c smell one first gets between Alber na and Mossel Bay has diminished. I suppose it’s inevitable that indigenous vegeta on is increasingly lost to agriculture. I end with this quaint quote by Dolly Parton: "Un l I was a teenager, I used red pokeberries for lips ck, a burnt matchs ck for eyeliner and honeysuckle for perfume."
