Renewed Fire Fears for Knysna
It is eight years next month since the 2017 fires raged through Knysna, and some say we are just a couple of berg winds away from a repeat of that inferno.
I hate the thought. My sister lost their Noetzie house in that fire, so the trauma was close to home.
The reason for the renewed fear is because of the massive amount of alien vegeta on that has sprung up since the 2017 fires. There is now more alien vegeta on on the Garden Route than there was before the fires.
Aliens burn ho er and fiercer than indigenous vegeta on and that makes them far more difficult to ex nguish. Some mes impossible.
Cobus Meiring of the Garden Route Environmental Forum warned last week that disaster management agencies believed condi ons were right for a repeat of the 2017 fires.
“Invasive alien plants have made a comeback, providing more fuel for a wildfire than ever before,” he said.
Meiring claims na onal government’s Working for Water Programme, which started in the 1990s clearing aliens across the country, “has collapsed as a result of a lack of funding”.
I asked the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment (DFFE) if this were true, but they did not reply

I was cha ng about this to Prof Mandy Lombard of Nelson Mandela’s Marine Spa al Planning Ins tute.
Mandy, who lives in Sedgefield, believes the Green Scorpions, na onal government’s “environmental police”, don’t have the capacity to “bring the axe down” on transgressors.
“Even when landowners are issued a direc ve to clear aliens, they can say ‘I can’t afford it, so fine me. It’ll be cheaper than clearing the aliens’. Knysna Municipality has been giving direc ves for years and nothing really happens,” Lombard said.
She believes there could be a be er way: introduce a municipal bylaw that says you may not sell your land unless all alien vegeta on listed by DFFE has been cleared.
“There is quite a lot of buying and selling of land in Knysna, so it could be effec ve.”
The na onal legisla on requires the seller only to inform the buyer that there are illegal alien plants on the land, but not to clear them first.
For those who do not intend to sell, the bylaw could say if you do not get rid of the aliens, the municipality will do it and add the cost to your rates bill.
