Knysna Council’s Wake Up Call
The water crisis is not quite over, but it’s nearly there.
Municipal Manager Lulamile Mapoloba said he hoped to have the system running fully by Wednesday.
Good news, but it will take me to get the reservoirs full again.
I seriously hope this water crisis is a wake-up call for Knysna’s councillors. They failed to invest in infrastructure, and the town ran out of water
At a Ward 9 public mee ng about the dra budget last week Rhoydon Parry, manager of municipal water and wastewater services, told residents that the cause of the water problems was because “unfortunately a lot of things happened at the same me”
“The Glebe pump overheated, the pumps packed up at Gouna and of the two pumps at Knysna, one packed up,” he said.
Why on earth did council not invest in back-up pumps?
Do councillors drive cars with no spare tyres?
And if the municipality fails to fill key vacancies urgently, with properly qualified staff, Knysna will con nue to lurch from crisis to crisis.
In the mean me 602 residents, who already pay rates, put their hands in their pockets to donate to Eugene Vermaak’s Knysna Infrastructure Group (KIG). It saved the day with the water crisis: KIG spent R261000 to help sort it out, including flying a motor from Joburg.
As Vermaak said: “Without this we would not have seen any pump remotely close to Knysna – never mind facilita ng the installa on.”
KIG also plays a key role in the sewerage works, and has been paying an engineer for months to run the treatment plant because there was no one doing that crucial job.
We 602 pay, or the lagoon becomes a sewer.
These problems are not new, and the Knysna community is sick of it all.
But I think there is hope. At the Ward 9 mee ng I was impressed to hear new mayor Thando Ma ka say: “As councillors, we did not budget 10 years ago for infrastructure. Now we’re si ng with problems.”
How o en does one hear poli cians admit faults?
Ma ka said the council wanted to buy new water pumps plus spare pumps. Good. He also acknowledged the role that business and KIG were playing to help sort out the water crisis.
“We are grateful for the business people who assisted us, and for KIG, we are very grateful to them.”
The mayor appealed to the public to support the new directors, some of whom have been in office for only six months and are dealing with inherited problems. I agree.
Municipal Manager Lulamile Mapholoba, appointed in December, also inspired hope.
“The truth is, yes, the municipality has not been properly led for a long me. Now each cent goes to where it is intended. . .We are working hard to fill all cri cal vacancies in infrastructure, electricity and community services,” Mapholoba said.
He paid tribute to the help the KM was ge ng from business, and “even some re red engineers are coming to help”.
So we have a new mayor, new MM and new directors, and they’re all saying the right things.
Now they must do the right things.
As Vermaak said at the mee ng, let’s give them a chance.
