Citizen Science for Nature Challenge
I have scratches aplenty and a couple of thorns from trying to beat my way through the thick coastal vegeta on west of Noetzie.
It was the first me I had taken this route in a few years and found the paths had become overgrown and we kept arriving at dead ends. There was a fair bit of bundu-bashing and cursing. I felt like Absalom at mes, pinned by my hair to bushes.
Our des na on was Shelly Beach, a li le stony cove where we wanted to photograph marine life in rock pools.
The reason? We were taking part in the 4-day “bioblitz”, or iNaturalist City Nature Challenge 2025.
I’m sure there were many other Garden Routers taking part last weekend. For those who don’t know about the Nature Challenge, it is an “annual, global, community science compe on to document city biodiversity”
It is fun. A er registering online with iNaturalist in your city or town you had four days from 25th to 28th April to photograph all the plants, animals, fungi, birds, insects that you can find in you municipal area. If you missed it, make a note to register for April 2026.
A erwards you upload the pix with the iNaturalist app and there are appointed fundis who confirm the iden ty of the species from ci zens’ photos.
The point is to help ci es and towns build a database of the nature occurring in their area. The data contributes to various scien fic endeavours and helps managers get a handle on the biodiversity in their municipali es for planning.
How lucky we are in the Garden Route. We have nature in abundance within our municipal boundaries.
So how did this compe on get started? Three women from the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of LA decided in 2016 to have a compe on between San Francisco and LA to see which city could record the most species.
The challenge spread to 16 ci es in 2017 and by 2018 there were 68 ci es around the world taking part. San Francisco kept on winning.
In 2019 guess which city won? Cape Town! It won most species photographed and the most observa ons made, but lost to San Francisco in the most par cipants category: CT had 31,000 and San Francisco had 32,000.
Of course the playing fields are not level because Cape Town is in the Cape Floral Kingdom that has around 9000 plant species. Hard not to win “most species”
Back to the rock pools, which we finally photographed –hardly any sea life in them – and the next day the fynbos on the headland and finally the forest along the Noetzie River.
I was limited as I only have a cell phone camera, but it was fun nevertheless. I’m eager to see how the Garden Route performed. Remember – if you didn’t take part this year, you can do so next year.
