A Pope Of Our Time

Pope’s come and go and I don’t think about them much, but I was really saddened by the death this week of Pope Francis.

He seemed to bring to life the simplicity of Chrisanity –universal love, kindness, non-materialism – in a way that many have described as a “breath of fresh air” in the elaborate, conservave Catholic Church.

The first thing I read about Pope Francis that made me think he would be different, was when he turned down being driven back to his hotel in the papal limousine on the night he was elected, and instead hopped into the minibus with the other cardinals. He also caught a bus back to his hotel the next day to collect his suitcase and pay his bill. A pope on a bus – must be a first.

He usually drove himself around the city, either in a small Ford Focus or a 1984 Renault 4.

He also chose not to live in the sumptuous Papal Palace in the Vacan, but in one of the modest guest coages. Even cooked for himself somemes.

Humility, a core Chrisan value.

He was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in 1936, the son of Italian immigrants in Buenos Aires. He was many things before becoming a priest, including a janitor and a nightclub bouncer. He studied chemistry and worked for many years in a laboratory in the food secon.

He was inspired to become a priest aer a meeng with another priest at confession. He studied at a seminary and later became a Jesuit.

A deﬁning characterisc of Pope Francis’s papacy was his dedicaon to the poor. In Buenos Aires he was a priest to people living in slums, and became known as the “slum bishop”. His care for the poor and marginalised connued throughout his papacy, and inspired even those who were not Catholic.

When Pope Francis was asked at a press conference about homosexuality, his now famous reply was: “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has goodwill, who am I to judge?”

Pope Francis cleaned up the Vacan’s corrupt ﬁnances. In 2021 the NPR radio in the US said “he approved the indictment for money laundering, fraud and the abuse of oﬃce of 10 people, including a cardinal – unprecedented in modern history”

He appointed many women to high-level posts in the Vacan, he spoke out about naons failing to address climate change, and cricised rich countries – including Trump – for turning away migrants and refugees.

He cricised uncontrolled capitalism and what it was doing to the environment.

“Once greed for money presides over the enre socio-economic system, it ruins society, it sets people against one another, it even puts at risk our common home, our sister, Mother Earth.”

The conservaves didn’t like him, while the progressives said he did not push reforms far enough.

I think he did prey well. One cannot completely overhaul a global, 2000-year-old instuon in 13 years, but his words and acons brought back a focus on Chrisanity’s core values of mercy, forgiveness and love.

The Guardian wrote: “He didn’t see himself as progressive or conservave. He just believed that he was doing what was in the Gospel.”

Knysna Lions Club, Youth for Christ and Hope Cabinetry are running a box car derby 28 April 2025, staring at 10h00 in the Knysna Industrial Area.

Grade 7 learners from nine schools will be participating in what promises to be a fun filled day of box car racing by the learners and a few novelty races.
