2. Oversee the daily operations of the restaurant and bar, including opening and closing procedures.

Requirements:
1. Minimum of 2 years of experience in a supervisory role within the Food and Beverage industry

Crossing the Bar
Anyone who sails in Knysna knows that “crossing the bar” –naviga ng your boat across the submerged rocks and sandbar between The Heads – can be dangerous.
In the old days there were pilots to guide vessels across the bar, pu ng out a signal when it was safe to do so and a danger signal when it was not.
Knysna had many pilots sta oned at The Heads between 1818 and 1954. Most were appointed by the government, but when they stopped official appointments in 1827, George Rex’s family were voluntary pilots for the next 33 years.
The Benns are probably the best known of Knysna’s pilots.
John Benn was appointed in 1868, the first of five Benns to hold the post.
I want to tell you a tale about his son, John Benn 2, who was the pilot from 1877 to 1912.
John 2 loved the lagoon - but he had to go to school. He stuck it out un l he was 12 and according to Timber and Tides author Winnie Tapson, le school “and spent the rest of his boyhood with his father, learning the lore of ships and the sea”. What a life!
At 19 he went to sea and returned to Knysna at 22 as his father’s assistant. In1877 became a full pilot.
So this is the tale: In the winter of 1897 the Norwegian sailing ship Friedheim was lying outside The Heads, wai ng for Benn’s signal to enter safely. The ship was carrying a cargo of creosote.
The ship’s captain waited for a week and then thought “To hell with this!” and tried to cross the bar - on an outgoing spring de in a powerful north-westerly.
Bad move.
“As she tried to turn, she struck the rocks off Coney Glenn. In 15 minutes she had disintegrated,” wrote Tapson.
Knysna residents rushed to the scene on horseback and in carts, while John Benn 2 launched his lifeboat into the rough sea. The creosote had spilled and the crew in the water were covered in it.
Benn rescued three sailors while Knysna’s “rocket crew” fired ropes across to sailors clinging onto the deck and got them ashore.
All were saved except one old sail-maker “who refused to make a jump for it.” He shouted that he was too old.
Days later his body washed up on Steenbok Island, now Leisure Island.
The nine rescued crew were taken to the bungalow of a Mrs Horn at The Heads where they had the creosote washed off them and were given brandy and hot coffee.
Wonderfully brave, John Benn. He was given the Royal Humane Society’s Cer ficate and Bronze Medal for heroism.
Of course the spilled creosote was lethal, and killed fish and other marine life that washed up dead “in their thousands” for weeks a erwards.
But here’s something that intrigues me. Tapson wrote: “To this day you can see the imprint of a sailor’s bare creosote-stained foot indelibly etched into one of the bedroom floor boards.”
Timber and Tides was published in 1961. Is it possible that the old bungalow s ll exists? And if it does, is that sailor’s creosote footprint from 1897 s ll there?
