Witches and Ghosts

Most of you will know about the Salem Witch Trials in America back in 1692 when 20 people were put to death for being “witches”

Nineteen of these were hanged and one was crushed to death by having boulders piled on top of him.

These horrible events began aer a group of girls in Salem started having convulsions and hallucinaons, which the village doctor aributed to witchcra.

Sounds crazy, but belief in witchcra was rife in those days, and esmaons are that in Europe between 1450 and 1750 about 45,000 people – mostly women - were killed for being witches.

The Salem girls accepted the doctor’s witchcra diagnosis and even pointed out those they believed were the witches who had caused their symptoms. Those poor people were arrested, some tortured and then put on trial. Apparently even having marks on one’s skin like moles was considered a “sign” of being a witch.

The Salem witchcra trials took place between June 1692 and May 1693.

Most of this is well known, but today I read something I had never heard of before: that the convulsions and hallucinaons the Salem girls experienced may have been the result of eang bread made from rye that had been infected by the ergot fungus. How weird is that?

Apparently ergot produces toxins in the rye, including lysergic acid, or LSD. If you eat infected rye bread these toxins may cause convulsions, delusions and hallucinaons – just like those the Salem girls experienced.

According to this theory, the fungus was likely to have aﬀected younger people whose immune systems were not fully developed.

The theory also says the reason the Salem witch trials ended abruptly in 1693 was simply because the village had run out of the infected rye. So the whole “witch” mania could simply have been the result of vrot bread.

The reason I was reading about witchcra is because I am watching a ﬁconal TV series about murders in the Spanish Pyrenees. It is dark and engrossing with strong elements of old mythology and witchcra. It made me want to see the extent of witchcra in the modern world and I found something quite frightening: a 2023 United Naons

Human Rights report says even today hundreds of thousands of people are persecuted for witchcra, especially in Africa, India and Papua New Guinea.

Sounds incredible, doesn’t it?

Then there is the belief in ghosts. Some of you may have seen the recent video of a prison chaplain from the Department of Correconal Services addressing a crowd at an oﬃcial departmental event about the schoolgirl rape case in Mataele in KZN. The oﬃcial told the crowd that she had just heard “horrible news”. None of the suspects were responsible for the alleged rape she said.

I was gob smacked. Sounds like something Monty Python would come up with.

Remember the Monty Python witch scene: “How do we tell if she is a witch?” Answer: if she ﬂoats, she’s a witch, if she sinks, she’s not a witch.

Sadly it appears that millions of people would fail to see the sare. Mmm, hope chang on the stoep is more cheerful next week.

Qualiﬁcations:

1 . R e l e v a n t D i p l o m a a n d /o r 2-3 years’ experience in a Senior Role withing the housekeeping department

2. In-depth knowledge of cleaning protocols, equipment, and materials.

3 E xc e l l e n t l e a d e r s h i p a n d interpersonal skills.

4. Strong organizational and timemanagement abilities.

5. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
