Not Coming up Trumps
Trump will be remembered for many things, but perhaps future genera ons will remember him most for making climate change worse.
“Drill, baby, drill!” is one of Trump’s notorious statements, calling for even more drilling for oil and gas. More oil and gas means more carbon emissions and so more climate change.
That’s a seriously bad move for the leader of a country that is the second biggest emi er of greenhouse gases in the world.
Not only that, but the US has released more climate-changing greenhouse gases into our atmosphere than any other country since the Industrial Revolu on, accoun ng for roughly 24% of the total.
Remember, these carbon emissions don’t just disappear. They stay in our atmosphere for anything from 300 years to 1000 years, trapping heat, making the world ho er.
China is the biggest greenhouse gas emi er today, but it is a rela ve newcomer.
The US was slow to wake up to climate change compared to other developed countries, but at least it had set some policies in mo on.
Now Trump seems set on reversing all that. Perhaps not surprising from a man who called climate change a “a hoax”

The good news is that some US states are pushing back against Trump.
You may already know that the manufacture of cement is one of the biggest carbon emi ers, and the manufacture of steel is pre y bad too. But there are ways to produce both cement and steel that emit less carbon.
So in 2022 former US president Joe Biden launched the Federal Buy Clean Ini a ve whereby the US government had to priori ze using low-carbon construc on materials in all government-funded projects. Excellent idea!
But then along came climate-denier Trump who scrapped the Buy Clean programme. But here’s the good part: at least nine US states have already made Buy Clean laws in their states.
According to Canary Media, these nine US states are California, Oregon, Colorado, Washington, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Minnesota and Massachuse s, and other states are following.
It’s not going to be easy for them. Under Biden “billions of dollars in climate funding” was allocated to help state governments to decarbonise these construc on materials, but because of Trump that money has gone.
“But state agencies and industry associa ons say they’re forging ahead – guided by their own laws and commitments to slash carbon,” the ar cle said.
That’s great, some US states thumbing their noses at their president’s moves to make climate change worse.
I like the comment I came across in an US-Asia Law publica on that was talking about Trump’s an -climate change ac ons: “One man must not be allowed to reverse decades of progress and obstruct climate ac on that is a ma er of life or death for billions of people worldwide. How we respond at this cri cal point in history will be remembered for genera ons to come.”
As I said at the start, our children and grandchildren will probably remember Trump as the man who made climate change – and their lives - worse.
The sad thing is, I don’t think Trump gives a damn.

Born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, on March 29, 1934, in later life it was South Africa that captured his heart. Enchanted by its sweeping lagoons and perched up on a coastal cliff, Fritz and Nancy called Knysna, South Africa, home for nearly 30 years. The cherished friends, exquisite food and wine, pristine golf courses, and stunning views where the coast and forest meet, kept them coming year after year
Fritz is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nancy Rosendahl; his children, Jennifer Banta, Tracy Rhodes, John (Lindsey) Rosendahl, and Christina Rosendahl, and their families including his brother James Edward (Jim) Rosendahl; numerous nephews and nieces; and dear friends from across the globe.
