Cheesewood Tree having a Hard Time
Have you ever heard of a cheesewood tree?
It is an amazing tree, indigenous, with lots of medicinal quali es. It is one of only 52 protected trees in South Africa out of about 2100 indigenous species, so it’s special.
My introduc on to this tree here at Noetzie was sad. Someone had taken a knife to it and stripped off its bark – right around the trunk. Well, you know what happens when you debark a tree: it dies.
That’s because there is a layer called the “phloem” just underneath the bark that is the tree’s food transport system. It’s a highway that takes food from the leaves to the roots. Take away the bark and you cut this food transport system. When the roots cannot get food, they die and so does the tree.
Why would someone do such a horrible thing?
Ah well, probably because of sex.
Thing is, some believe that if you soak this tree’s bark in your beer, you create an aphrodisiac. A myth of course, but tell a man that he’ll get more vooma in his pooma if he drops some bark in his beer and whoosh! – he’s out there hacking at that tree.
Ok, unfair, most men would laugh it off, but unfortunately there are enough gullible guys who will pay good money for anything that they are told will put a sparkle in their parkle. If there is a market, there is a poacher, which means the Pi osporum viridiflorum tree gets debarked and dies.
By the way, my guess is that if any bark-munching palooka does happen to feel an exci ng ngle in his dingle, it’s all in the mind.
Back to the debarked tree. My sister Julie thought if she cling-wrapped the bare trunk, she could keep it moist and perhaps it would survive.
But what about the food highway that was destroyed?
Well, Wendy had a plan. She knew that tampering with a protected cheesewood was a criminal offence, but she thought as it would die anyway some “crash surgery” was permissible.
She sawed off a branch, stripped off the bark, took the cling wrap off the trunk and pressed the bark onto the naked trunk. She cut li le “dovetail joints” to connect it to the bark above and below, then did another sec on on the other side of the trunk.
Voilà, the bark and phloem highway was restored. But like a human skin gra , would it take?
“We will have to wait and see, but I can say when I pushed the bark onto the trunk, sap came out.”
Then industrial-type cling wrap was wrapped around the trunk with a no ce telling poachers not to touch it.
But that’s not all. CCTV cameras picked up what residents suspect is the poaching team. They captured the car and registra on, the guys walking down the road and emerging from the direc on of the tree with a bag. So inves ga ons are afoot.
Meanwhile, I hope those cheesewood bark-munchers get a serious droop in their sloop so the merchants of myth will lose customers and leave the tree alone.
Holding thumbs this one’s bark gra will save it.
