Whither the Wild Coast?
It was early morning on the Wild Coast as I quickened my pace to catch up with two of my group, misty figures in the hazy light walking towards the Cefani River mouth.
It was a long me since I’d been to the Wild Coast and it was as breathtakingly beau ful as I had remembered, the river flowing between magnificent forested hills full of birdsong, and the endless beach stretching away for miles.
There were almost no people: a few fishermen and a man walking his dog. There were shells for Africa and awesome rock forma ons on a wave-cut pla orm. We walked quite a way un l we came to the next river, this one with not a building in site. Paradise.
We swam in the river and two of us in the sea as well, the others having been put off by a local’s warning of “43 resident great white sharks offshore”. Ag – sta s cs say there’s more chance of being killed by a falling coconut.
One day a er a hot walk and swim we returned to our chalets and watched beau ful popcorn clouds building up over the hills. Soon the sky darkened and there were deep rolls of thunder with sheet and forked lightning. It was wonderful. I love summer storms.
At night si ng barefoot on the stoep with the braai fire in one corner we heard fiery-necked nightjars, water dikkop and a Cape eagle owl. We watched two geckoes on the wall stalking the same moth, but they were so slow we didn’t s ck around to see who won.
As wonderful as it was for us as visitors, the Wild Coast has its problems. Jobs are hard to come by and most people are poor
There are also many threats - like the highly controversial proposal to mine tanium near the town of Xolobeni. Many local residents have been figh ng this proposal for years, both because of poten al environmental damage, as well as the displacement of people and disrup on of their lives.
Then there is Shell’s project to conduct seismic surveys to find offshore oil or gas. Local residents eventually went to court to challenge Shell’s explora on licence, saying they had a right to be consulted first, and that the government had not adequately considered the impacts of these seismic surveys. They won the case in the High Court. The ma er is now with the Cons tu onal Court that has dismissed Shell’s applica on to appeal and confirmed that the company’s right to explore fossil fuel had been granted unlawfully - but said it would hear the appeal by Wild Coast communi es. The ma er has not been finalised.
And then there’s the controversial N2 Wild Coast Toll Road under construc on. It remains to be seen whether this highly contested road will bring economic upli ment to the local people, as proponents claim, or whether the poor will remain poor while the new highway opens the way for ribbon coastal development for the wealthy
Who knows how soon the Wild Coast will change forever, but I would not wait to see. If you love places that have held off the worst of development, visit the Wild Coast - before it disappears.
