Some are Hungry, Others Throw Away Food
Once when wri ng a story on research that said 1 in 4 people in Cape Town did not have enough to eat, the news editor told a photographer to get a pic of a family that was poor and hungry to illustrate the story
Crude, but that’s a newsroom on deadline.
The photographer asked me where he should go.
“Jeff, I’ve no idea, but the researchers say this is happening in all the poor areas.”
Off he went on what I thought was a needle-in-a-haystack quest. But Jeff was soon back with an excellent, but disturbing photograph. It showed a young woman si ng on a chair, her daughter blurred in the background, and in sharp focus on a table in front of her was half a cabbage and a third of a bo le of oil. That was all the food she had in the house.
“How did you find her?” I asked.
“I just walked into the streets and said: ‘Do you know anyone who doesn’t have enough food?’”
He was directed to this woman’s shack.
It was a humbling experience.
The reason I was remembering this was because of an ar cle in The Conversa on that said 15 million people in South Africa suffer from “food insecurity” – they don’t have enough food to live healthy lives. This has led to “stun ng” of 25% of our children – kids that are short and don’t develop mentally to their full poten al. This stun ng will affect their en re lives, and determine the kind of future they are likely to have.
And here’s a sta s c to make one weep: every year one third of food produced in South Africa goes to waste. That’s 10 million tons.
A lot of this is because we lack a proper “cold chain” from farm to shop, but there is also a lot of food that middle-class South Africans simply throw away. Past its sell-by date. Or you have too much food and some has gone off. Whatever the reason, it is pre y shocking. Of course government needs to tackle this.
But here’s the thing: hearing about how Knysna has energe c, civic-minded people, like those in the Knysna Infrastructure Group and Revive Knysna, I wondered if food security was something a group of locals could tackle.
If there are 15 million people without a secure food source in SA, it is pre y likely some live in Knysna.
It just takes one individual to spearhead it, and work with people in poorer areas, first to assess the problem and then to see what can be done. Something more sustainable than soup kitchens.
Food gardens come to mind. A friend of mine did this in Gugulethu with ver cal gardens a ached to shacks where people did not have much space. He designed a hanging garden structure with li le pouches, and people were growing all sorts of vegetables. Brilliant. Or perhaps ge ng the municipality to make land available for vegetable gardens like the “allotment” system in the UK.
It just needs one person to be a catalyst.
As Anne Frank said: “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before star ng to improve the world."
