In October last year CapeNature ranger Chanel Visser found an exhausted female lying on the beach at Ple enberg Bay
It was an adult green turtle and her chances of survival didn’t look good. She had gashes on her shell and was not moving a muscle.
Lucky for the turtle, Chanel knew what to do and took her to the Robberg Vet, part of the designated Turtle Rescue Network along the coast established by the Two Oceans Aquarium Founda on in Cape Town.
The next morning Two Oceans paid for the turtle to be flown to their Turtle Conserva on Centre.
You may think that is a lot of money to spend on one sea turtle, but green turtles – like all seven of the world’s turtle species –are endangered, so saving every individual is worth it.
Green turtles actually have dark shells, but were so named because their fat is greenish. Humans have killed them for centuries for their fat, meat and eggs. More recently thousands of turtles are killed every year by commercial and recrea onal fishing when they are caught in nets and drown.
They are also losing beach nes ng sites because of coastal development and are dying from swallowing plas c pollu on in the sea – and are s ll being hunted for meat and their eggs taken.
Interes ngly, green turtles are the only vegetarian turtles and graze on algae and seagrass, like the seagrass in the Knysna Estuary.
The aquarium named the turtle Stella.
A er Stella had been stabilised, they no ced she was lopsided. One side of her body stuck out of the water. A scan showed that she had a lung infec on that was causing air to leak into her body cavity, crea ng an air pocket that made her lopsided. She was put onto an bio cs and the vet regularly removed the air with a syringe.
Laura du Toit from the turtle centre said it appeared the infec on was going.
“She’s going for another scan soon and we’ll know for sure.”
Once recovered, Stella will be released back into the ocean.
Laura wants to remind everyone that March is the start of the “turtle-stranding season” when baby turtles – hatchlings - are washed off course and some are stranded on our beaches.
“If you find one, do not put it back into the sea. They are usually exhausted and are likely to drown,” Laura said.
Pick it up gently, take it home and put it in a well-ven lated box, lined with a cloth, out of the wind and sun and away from pets.

Laura says they usually get around 250 stranded hatchlings a year, but last year they got a massive 606. Of these 504 were rehabilitated and released.
“We had some hec c storms in April so that probably blew many off course. I’m hoping that won’t happen this year.”
The remaining 102 either needed more rehabilita on and sadly some died, mostly from ea ng plas c in the sea.
But s ll, there are 504 turtles swimming out there that would have died without the help of Two Oceans - and the public who picked them up.
