Helping Knysna Survive

The Knysna Infrastructure Group (KIG) – a residents’ iniave –was hard at work over the weekend helping the municipality ﬁx burst water pipes at Brenton Lake, Long Street and Hornlee.

Who would have thought Knysna could have so many burst pipes at one me?

KIG’s founder Eugene Vermaak worked through Sunday to help ﬁx them.

“He’s going to get burn-out,” one of my family remarked.

I asked Eugene if he were exhausted.

“Nah. I run a transport logiscs business with over 200 trucks running 24/7. If one gets a puncture at 2am I’ve got to sort it out, so I’m used to it.”

Good thing too, because Knysna’s infrastructure is in a bad way and will cost between R2.5bn to R3bn to ﬁx. Eugene says the KM will never get this, so believes the only way it can survive is through public/private partnerships.

“Knysna’s water security is hanging by a thread. That’s one of our focuses. The other is Ecoli in the lagoon. We need to assess the main sources and see how to ﬁx them. And we’re waing for an MOU to help ﬁx the worst of the potholes,” Eugene said.

The KIG is already running the sewerage works, paying R55,000 a month for an engineer to manage the plant. All municipal posts at the plant are vacant.

“They haven’t even got a labourer, so we sent our gardener to help.”

Eugene and seven others started KIG in early 2024 to address Knysna’s ailing infrastructure, and established a public/private partnership with the municipality

“We are not doing the municipality’s job, but are a support structure. There are some good officials but their hands are ed. The biggest problem is cash flow. Officials have to scratch around to get funds. It’s a nightmare.”

Eugene says the KM is not collecng the money it’s owed.

“Business owes R150 million in arrears. There are also a lot of poor people in arrears, but I’ve got no problem with them. If the municipality just collected the money business owes we would be in a totally diﬀerent place. Can you imagine if they had that R150 million? We would solve so many problems.”

When KIG gets reports of infrastructure problems, they report them to the municipality.

“Mostly we facilitate and the council pays, but yesterday with the three pipe bursts the municipality only had two teams, so they agreed we would contract B&V Contractors to aend to the third one. B&V bills us. We can’t claim that money back. So in a crisis when the municipality hasn’t got the resources or equipment, we do it, using KM approved contractors.”

The Brenton burst pipe cost KIG R40,000.

“If we don’t assist, they would be without water. That’s why funding is so crical.”

In Stoep Chat two weeks ago, Eugene called on 1000 residents to donate R100 a month to fund KIG’s work. A week later 158 residents had contributed R136,857, including prepayments.

Now Eugene has a new challenge: to get 10,000 residents to donate R100 a month.

“Imagine if 10,000 people stood together, what a lot we could do.”
