Dumping Rubbish in Space
I’ve wri en recently about people cleaning up rubbish the authori es fail to remove, but here’s one mess no ordinary person can fix: space junk.
The European Space Agency es mates there are about 29,000 pieces of space junk bigger than 10cm, and over 170 million pieces bigger than 1mm. All spinning round and round the Earth.
There are 2000 func oning satellites orbi ng Earth – which we depend on for communica ons, GPS, weather forecasts, etc – but there are also 3,000 totally dead satellites s ll up there.
Space junk moves fast - 7.5km a second – that’s seven mes faster than a bullet!
It moves so fast that when pieces collide, they go right through each other, faster than the shock waves the collision creates, and then sha er a erwards.
There are space surveillance networks that can track bigger space junk and predict the probability of collisions. If space junk is heading towards a satellite, operators may be able to move the satellite out of the way
I’ve actually seen a piece of space junk. About 20 years ago my newsdesk got a call about “a big metal ball” that had landed in a field near Malmesbury. A photographer and I went to inves gate and found a big round metal object, about knee-high, unlike anything we had seen before. It turned out to be a pressure sphere from a US spacecra used to store gases like oxygen so astronauts can breathe.
It landed not far from a group of farm workers ea ng their lunch. They were very lucky. They had first heard a loud noise and then saw a bright light streaking through the sky, followed by a massive thud as it landed.
There were two other pieces that landed elsewhere, and all three were later displayed in a Cape Town science museum.
Apparently most space junk doesn’t re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere, and if it does it usually burns up.
So why should we care about space junk?
Well, Canadian scien sts published research this week saying there is a 26% chance that space rocket junk will re-enter our atmosphere and pass through a busy flight area. That’s a one in four chance.
They say although the chances of space junk hi ng aircra are very low, it causes other problems like disrup ng flights. For instance, in 2022 Spanish and French authori es closed parts of their airspace a er being told a 20-ton piece of rocket was re-entering Earth’s atmosphere. Imagine how many people missed flights as a result.
Last year there were 258 rocket launches and 120 uncontrolled rocket junk re-entries to Earth.
“When SpaceX Starship exploded, authori es set up ‘keep out’ zones for aircra , many of which had to turn around or divert their flight path,” the researchers said.
Apparently rockets can be designed to have controlled re-entries – but that costs more.
“Companies that launch satellites won't spend the money to improve their rocket designs unless all of them are required to do so. So we need governments to come together and adopt new standards here,” one researcher wrote.
Agreed. Space companies should not transfer the risk of their space junk onto us.
And who wants yet another reason to have your flight delayed.
