I’d say it’s a group of guys who are fixing some of Knysna’s biggest problems – like the water supply and the sewerage system.
They call themselves the Knysna Infrastructure Group and are brilliant.
John Metelerkamp is one of them.
“There’s a litany of problems in Knysna but people complain that they pay rates so the municipality should sort them out. That’s true. But do we sit back and wait for the lagoon to collapse from raw sewage spills? Or for Knysna to run out of water because pipes and pumps are broken? Or do we do something to fix things?” John said.
The Knysna Infrastructure Group (KIG) has chosen to fix things, like Knysna’s water supply. Last year Knysna’s Akkerskoof holding dam had dropped dangerously low “Pipes had burst so we fixed that. Then we sourced two pumps from Botswana and flew them to PE and now the system is working.”
The KIG says it is a “facilita on ac on group” of residents formed to help Knysna Municipal officials do the urgent work needed to keep the town func oning.

KIG is the brainchild of Eugene Vermaak. In December 2022 he and Deon Boshoff raised funds to repair potholes in George Rex Drive.
“I thought if we could do that, we could do more. I got 10 guys together and said ‘how can we do this, because we can’t let the town go to pieces’”
They wrote to residents last August saying “it is easy to complain about the inadequacy of the Knysna Municipality, but this is not going to solve any problems. Unless an effec ve private partnership with the KM is established, the situa on will deteriorate very quickly which will adversely affect everyone living in the town”.
They focussed on Knysna’s ailing infrastructure. In December 2023 there were several sewage overflows at the sewerage works.
“I really lost it. I couldn’t get hold of anybody at the municipality and the councillors didn’t phone back. Nothing was working at the Waste Water Treatment Plant, not a single pump, just a lot of dead machines.”
Repairs would cost R3.3m. Funding from provincial government never materialised.
“So we did it ourselves with funding from residents and businesses. We’ve completed R2.2m of the work so far”
KIG is also paying R55,000 a month for an engineer to oversee the sewerage works.
“There is not a single employee at the plant. All posts are vacant.”
They are now moving 40 tons of sewage sludge a day, which is taken away for disposal. So far nothing is flowing into the lagoon.
KIG has given three support plans to the municipality detailing how they would help with infrastructure repairs.

“We need a steady stream of funding. If 1000 households could donate R100 a month, we would have a reasonable amount of income,” Eugene said.
