Working for the Common Good
There are talkers and there are doers, as the saying goes.
Themba Mase is a doer
I first heard about Themba from Ac on Ads’ owner Julie, who met him on the Noetzie Road last week on her way to work. He asked if she had any bags as he wanted to do a clean-up.
She gave him a pile of fer lizer bags and municipal bags, and bought him 10 pairs of gloves.
Themba and two helpers set to work.
If any of you have driven along the Noetzie Road you will know what he was tackling: piles of filth, especially where the road goes through Hlalani just off the N2.
You know, that road is so bad that one of Knysna’s ac ng municipal managers, intending to do a site visit at Noetzie, turned back a er a few yards.
Themba was born in Knysna and lives in Hlalani.
“Every day when I come home I see all this rubbish. I called the municipality but they didn’t respond to my messages.”
Themba worked as a painter for years, but developed back problems recently so he le the company
He started his own business, Loerie Services, so he can employ others to do the physical work of pain ng and maintenance while he runs the business. But he hasn’t got any work at the moment.
“So I thought this is the best chance to do something for the community. I started cleaning up in my street and cu ng the grass. One thing led to another and last week I started cleaning the Noetzie Road. Ah, it is bad. I recruited two guys to help and I give them what I can.”
Besides the piles of rubbish with dogs and pigs roo ng around for scraps, there is sewage running onto the Noetzie road.
“It is running out near the crèche,” Themba said.
Themba and his two men waded into this mess. By the end of the week they had collected over 700 bags of rubbish.
Julie alerted Penny Rice, who heads Revive Knysna’s Keep Knysna Clean ini a ve, and she supplied Themba with more bags as well as rakes and brooms.
“Kudos to him for what he’s doing. I believe good begets good and I encourage people to support people like him,” Penny said.
Penny is also a doer. A er the Carte Blanche TV programme highligh ng Knysna’s pollu on problems, she decided to “get this place clean”.
She started the Keep Knysna Clean project that is now part of Revive Knysna.
“I came under cri cism at the start, people saying ‘Oh she’ll just fizzle out’, but I believe even if we collect just one bag of li er a day, it is one bag less of li er in the lagoon, because that is where it all ends up.”
She now employs two men.
I take my hat off to people like Themba and Penny. They’re perfect examples of what Barack Obama meant when he said: “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other me. We’re the ones we’ve been wai ng for.”
