Dead Dolphins Can Tell Tales

One of the delights of staying at Noetzie was seeing dolphins almost every other day

I loved it best when they surfed the swells, shoong along at great speed and just as the wave was about to break they ﬂipped back with a ﬂick of their tails.

So I was parcularly sad to get a photograph on Monday of a baby dolphin that had washed up dead at Noetzie.

I sent the pic to Dr Gwen Penry of the Centre for Dolphin Studies at Ple who idenﬁed it as a male Indo-Paciﬁc bolenose dolphin.

“Very newborn, you can see the umbilicus is sll raw,” she texted. Poor thing. Dead before it had a chance to live.

I wondered why it had died, but I guess unless there are speciﬁc injuries it’s not always possible to tell.

But even dead, this baby could tell researchers a few things.

Marine mammals are of course not as easy to study as land mammals, so sciensts try to collect as much informaon as possible from stranded or dead dolphins, whales and seals. They take measurements of the animals and samples of skin and blubber

Blubber can tell researchers quite a few things, like the genec makeup of the dolphin, its feeding habits and whether it has been exposed to polluon in the ocean.

Gwen tried to organise someone from the Knysna volunteers to go to Noetzie to do the sampling, but no one responded. I suggested she ask Noetzie Conservancy Owners’ Associaon member

Wendy Dewberry if she could do it.

Wendy immediately agreed: “I said of course I would because Noetzie Conservancy people are acve and like to help researchers when we can.”

Gwen explained to Wendy what to do by text.

“She said I must wear gloves, cut into the blubber, take a sample, and put it in n foil and into a plasc bag then store it in the freezer unl she could collect it.

“I did that, but only when I got back I saw she also wanted me to take skin samples, but luckily I had cut oﬀ the whole ﬁn which has plenty of skin.”

Wendy had cut the ﬁn oﬀ to send to the researchers because it had a series of deep cuts, quite evenly spaced, that she thought may have been caused by a boat propeller

The dolphin measured 91cm from p to tail, which Gwen said was the average size of a newborn dolphin.

The samples will go to a researcher at Bayworld in Gqeberha. I’m keen to ﬁnd out what they learn.

Wring about the lile dolphin reminded me of this lovely quote from Douglas Adams’ great book The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

“On the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much— the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good me. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons.”
