What’s in a Word?

Brain rot.

That is the Oxford Dic onary’s winning Word of the Year for 2024.

It’s not a new word but was chosen because there has been a huge spike in its use this year.

A quick descrip on of brain rot is what you get from spending too much me on rubbish online.

The Oxford defines it as: “the supposed deteriora on of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of overconsump on of material (now par cularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging.”

There you have it.

The Oxford’s experts, who monitor this sort of thing using huge amounts of data, found the use of “brain rot” had increased by 230% between 2023 and 2024.

One of the criteria for selec ng Word of the Year is that it must relate to that par cular year in some way.

“Every year our experts decide on words which reflect the ethos, mood, or preoccupa ons of a par cular year, and which have the poten al to provide a snapshot of social history through language,” the Oxford selectors said.

Quite fun that.

It’s interes ng to look back at previous winners and see how they reflect their years. These caught my a en on: podcast in 2005; carbon neutral in 2006; selfie in 2023 and post-truth in 2016.

The first three are obvious, but I was curious as to how post-truth reflected 2016.

The Oxford defines post-truth as “an adjec ve describing a situa on where personal belief and emo onal appeals are more influen al than objec ve facts in shaping public opinion”.

It a ributed the whopping 2000% increase in the use of “post-truth” in 2016 to the Brexit referendum in the UK and Trump’s winning the elec on in the US. Interes ng.

The 2019 winner was “climate emergency” because of the heightened awareness of climate change that year.

It had a lot to do with climate ac vist Greta Thunberg who co-ordinated protests around the world in 2019 and addressed the UN Climate Ac on Summit with her now famous “How Dare You!” speech.

Remember when a Covid vaccina on was found and all the hoo-ha around that? Vaxxers and an -vaxxers? No surprise that “vax” was the winner in 2021.

Back to brain rot.

The first recorded use of the word was in 1854 in Henry Thoreau’s book Walden.

Thoreau used the expression “brain rot” as we might use “dumbing down”.

He believed society “devalued” complex ideas in favour of simple ones.

He wrote: “While England endeavours to cure the potato rot, will not any endeavour to cure the brain-rot – which prevails so much more widely and fatally?”

Imagine what he would make of society’s dumbing down today.

Casper Grathwohl, President of Oxford Languages, said looking back at the Oxford Word of the Year winners since the compe on began in 2004, one could see society’s “growing preoccupa on with our virtual lives and the way internet culture is permea ng so much of who we are and what we talk about. “‘Brain rot’ speaks to one of the perceived dangers of virtual life, and how we are using our free me. It feels like a righ ul next chapter in the cultural conversa on about humanity and technology.”
