Hackers Need You Sunday found me si ng on a burned mountain slope above Kalk Bay pulling up alien plant seedlings, some as small as my thumbnail.

It was a perfect day for the job – cloudy and no wind.

I was part of a group of about 15 locals from the newly formed Kalk Bay Alien Clearing group.

You cannot believe what this mountain looks like. The huge fires in February le it like a moonscape. Then a er the winter rains hundreds of thousands of alien port jackson willow seeds sprouted everywhere.

Fire makes them “go viral” – rooikrans and black wa le too.

These trees are killers, smothering indigenous fynbos and forests because they grow faster, especially a er fire. They don’t belong in SA and must go.

Penny, a seasoned hacker who has been clearing aliens for decades, was on site to guide the newbies on what to pull out.

She is amazing.

Neighbour Philip, who was working next to me, said he had told Penny he got despondent at the size of the problem.

“She said I must just keep going. You know, she cleared the sec on above Clovelly single-handedly.”

I asked Penny if she knew how many alien plants she had eradicated over the years.

She smiled: “Thirty thousand.”

I gasped. Then she added that this was only since she has begun coun ng, not the total number since she had started.

Why is it so important to eradicate alien plants?

Go no further than water. SA is a water stressed country.

Cape Town has already faced a Day Zero when our taps almost ran dry.

Knysna has water restric ons more o en than not.

Aliens suck up a huge amount of water, far more than indigenous vegeta on. In mountain catchment areas they use water that could otherwise flow into rivers and storage dams.

The Western Cape Water Supply System loses over 100 million litres of water every day because of alien plants. Knysna uses about 15 million litres a day – so work that one out!

If aliens are not controlled, this loss of water is expected to triple by 2050. We will really be in a pickle.

The cost of ge ng rid of aliens is huge. Between 2020 and 2022 the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries spent R1.5bn clearing 3.6 million hectares of aliens (which created 855,000 jobs).

It’s good but not enough: Aliens show no sign of disappearing.

Government needs help.

There are 52 volunteer alien hacking groups in the Western Cape.

A University of Stellenbosch study on half of these found that they cleared about 5,300 ha of aliens a year – that’s about 5,300 rugby fields - saving R5.1m a year on labour costs.
