Micro-walks: The New Good Thing

You’ve been sing at your desk working for hours so you think you’ll go for a long walk later to get the body moving again.

That’s good.

But here is something even beer. New research has found that if you take short walks of 10 to 30 seconds throughout the day, you use more energy than one walk of the same length – and you burn between 20% and 60% more calories.

Isn’t that astonishing?

Researchers at the University of Milan did a small study comparing people who did short walks of 10 to 30 seconds, with breaks in between, with those who did longer walks covering the same distance, and came up with those ﬁndings. They call them “microwalks”.

A micro-walk could be going to make coﬀee, a stroll around the oﬃce or outside onto the pavement. And voilà! – you not only burn more calories, but these short walks throughout the day improve your circulaon, keep your muscles working, speed up your metabolism. Apparently micro-walks are good for your moods too, because frequent movement reduces stress.

Don’t stop your long walks. Volumes of research show the health beneﬁts of walking, including strengthening heart, lungs, bones and joints; reducing the risk of heart disease and strokes; improving your immune system. Walking is like a wonder drug.

But this research is saying don’t spend your days sing sll at a desk - even if you go to the gym or for a run or walk daily. Do lots of microwalks around the oﬃce or house throughout the day to counteract the negave eﬀect of sing sll for so long.

I love it when researchers come up with something so simple.

Recently I also read about balance. Apparently there are a whole lot of processes our brain goes through for us to keep our balance, and these decline with age and inacvity. People over 50 may have found their balance is not what it once was. Poor balance increases the risk of falling. Young people usually bounce back aer a fall, but research has shown that falls are the leading cause of injuries in people over 65, and are the most common cause of broken hips and brain injuries.

I tried out a few exercises to see how good my balance was. (Not suggesng anyone tries this at home!)

The ﬁrst was to stand with my feet together, ankles touching, arms folded for 60 seconds. Piece of cake. Then I did the same thing with eyes closed. Mmm. Had to crunch my toes into the ﬂoorboards, but it was easy.

Then I stood with one foot in front of the other, toes touching the heel, closed my eyes and tried to hold this pose for 60 seconds. Haha - I managed about four seconds.

Pracse makes perfect they say, so I am aiming for at least 10 seconds within a month.

I’ve been sing sll in front of my computer for a while now, so I need a micro-walk.

I think it’ll be a micro-walk to get a sundowner. Apparently a glass of red has health beneﬁts too, so it’ll be two-in-one. Cheers!
